How far have you pushed a T5-Z?

Got the new combo in my sig together and running for a few weeks now.. Have had a few street races, and just the odd back road late night fun session with the new parts. Nothing serious. Prior to the new AFRs and Edelbrock intake, the tranny was/worked perfect... no noises etc.

This 330 ft lb T5-Z has only had maybe 10 passes on slicks total. And, was only ever behind my internally stock engine [till a few weeks ago when I installed the AFRs]. I did powershift it when at track, or there was a race. My T5-Z only has about 5000 miles on it, was bought brand new in Sept, 2002, and is starting to take a dump I think... :nonono:

When you back up and start letting the clutch out, you can hear a strange rattling coming from under the car/inside the tranny.. does it sometimes when taking off in 1st. Also at idle, there's a very quiet metallic groaning sound.. almost the same sound as a machine shop turning a brake rotor, but its real quiet and sounds like its under the console right about where the bellhousing/front of trans is...[input shaft bearing??] Pushing in the clutch doesn't change anything. Groaning isn't heard when driving but it does have a whine to it, although its whined a tad since new. Every T5-Z i've heard whines a tad in 1st 2nd and 3rd.

With 5000 miles on it, and my motor making maybe 320 FLYWHEEL HP on a nice cool day.. there's no way this new combo should be killing this T5-Z.

How far/fast have some of you gone with the Z trannies? This is rediculous with 5000 miles on it. No??

Mine is doing great, and I suspect I am making 360 HP. Never run slicks, just drag radials. No powershifting. Its the original tranny and has never been serviced, just changed fluid regularly. It whines a little bit in 1,2 and 3 but thats it. Everything is slick as snot. Over 100k miles. I guess its my luck.

My friend broke one in a month in his bolton 87 GT. He was launching on drag radials and powershifting. The stock T5 lasted longer. It's really still a pos T5, no matter what fancy name they put on it. It's a small transmission, with small parts.

My T5z has been thru 2 motors and now on it's 3rd. It lasted 30k on the original motor before rebuilding it up to a 347. lasted approx 25k behind that motor before I tore it down for more upgrades. it's got about 2500 miles behind this new 347 w/N20 and still shift's like a champ, no noises, grinding leaks. Just change fluid using synthetic red line every 10k miles.

Granted, I don't drag race the car nor slam gears real hard (just shift very quickly). I have however done my share of 2nd & 3rd gear tire roasting, but thats about as hard as I get with it. IMO, the fact the tires roast so easy is adding to it's lifespan. Hope to get about 15k more outa it before upgrading to either a G-ForceT5 or a T56.

Maybe your throwout bearing is junk.

I think he may have it. I think what you are hearing is the TO bearing, I bet you have it improperly adjusted (more common than you think........) I will see if I can come up with the instructions for proper adjustment after I get off work.

it's possible it's the throwout bearing. I just figured it wans't because this just started to do this... It's a Motorsport clutch with about double the mileage that trans has...

Still has the stock cable and quadrant in it... which works smoothly/fine.. engages and disnegages fine. No grinding on the shifts.. Just the funny groaning noise when the car is idling... clutch in, clutch out. And, when you let the the clutch outbacking up, sometimes it will make a loose rattling noise.

I had a friend with a Capri RS using a stock T5 [not a Z] ran a bunch of low 11s and then sold the trans after going to an auto.. working fine still.. Just have to keep an eye on it I suppose.

Can't help but rant about my 4 banger T5 which is one of the worst 5 speeds in Mustang (from what I read on here).

I did 700kms on it with my mostly stock 302 (min. ported E7 heads, RPM airgap intake, 650cfm double pumper carb...). I do a lot of spining into 3rd and chirping 4th. No slicks though, this tranny has 260,000 kms lol. Saving up for a TKO or something.

It could also be your bearing retainer, I bought my t-5-z with 7k on it and the guy lacked to tell me that the bearing retainer was busted. I noticed it but installed it anyway and had the same types of noises you are talkin about. The rattling noise went with the rpm and you could feel it through the clutch pedal tho. So 3 days later I tore it out and put a steel bearing retainer in. No peeps since. I really like the tranny, alot better than my stock with 120k on it. Oh yea, I switched from regular atf to amsoil synthetic and what a world of difference.

Hope this helps some
