Well since my autometer cobalt machanical guage went out i have no clue how hot my 331 is getting, it's been 100*+ the past couple of days and on short trips 15 miles to work in the heat it will get to the "O" or the "R" but today i drove to the beach for about 2 hours without the A/C and it climbed to the "M-A" range, how hot is that?? it's got a mr. gasket 180 t-stat, and a Mishimoto radiator and the motor has racked a total of like 300 miles.

That seems REALLY hot for an aftermarket rad. and a 180* t-stat.
Is that a 2 or 3 row rad.? I am only asking because I am in the process of putting a Fluidyne and the same t-stat. I did notice the "disk" around the t-stat, that sits in the housing, is smaller on the Mr.Gasket than on the stock t-stat

thats what i was thinking especially since my start up chip has the fans coming on earlier...i think the mishimoto is a two row...it's whatever that fluidyne is because it's a copy of it.

Has it done that before, may just be a one time thing. Then again it could have an air bubble in the system, bad sensor/relay, or any number of things. Hopefully it's nothing serious or a reoccuring for that matter.

Air bubble?? how do you get riof that?? at start-up i filled the radiator, waited for the t-stat to open then kept filling it till it would not take anymore, then i drove i for 30 mins and let it sit overnight and topped it off in the morning, am i missing something? Well it has ALWAYS ran hot but now it has a brand new motor, brand new water pump, brand new hoses, brand new mr.gasket 180 t-stat, brand new mishimoto radiator, brand new coolant temp sensor, brand new temp sending unit, and well a ALL brand new cooling system.

damn, I don't think that the "M" is anywhere near 250 degrees unless mine is wrong. Mine reads about 180-185 at the "O-R" range, about 185-190 at the "R-M range", and about 195-205 at the "M-A range"

With all that money spent under the hood, go spend 15-60 bucks on a real mechanical gauge. The parts store units for 15 bucks will work fine for you diagnostics.

If this occurs at speed, ensure the air dam is present.
If it happens while going slow/stationary, make sure your fan is indeed coming on and staying on.

The burping idea is a good one. I like to get the driver's-side front up higher than the rest of the system to help air escape. I'd keep burping it - sometimes it takes awhile to get all of the air out if the system was fairly drained.

Good luck.

Burping is simple but I dont post about it much because someone can get burned by hot coolant.

I get the Driver's-side front end higher than the rest of the system. Either jack the car up a little bit in that corner or park on a hill so you achieve the same thing. On a COLD motor, remove the cap and let it idle. When the stat opens, one can view coolant flowing crosswise in the radiator. I just let it idle like this for 15 or 20 mins and that normally takes care of most of it.

While doing this, putting a rag or something over the filler is a very good idea in case hot coolant splashes out of the radiator neck. You could also leave the cap sitting in the radiator neck, but not screwed down.

(That was all just a general warning - it's not directed at anyone on this thread).

I use a turkey thermometer in the radiator neck to see how temps there compare to my gauge. This might work for you - cooking thermo's are like 2 bucks. Just dont use it for preparation of consumables again.

Mr Gasket does make a rad cap that has a thermometer in it - I've not used one (I'd rather have a real gauge, especially since caps are wear-items). But that's an option I suppose.

In case it is of any help with background info, here are a little tech note that might or might not help.

General cooling system diagnostics

Good luck.

From what I can tell, it does not go up at the same rate. Like from the N to the O will only be a 20* difference, but further up the gauge, it seems that one letter to another will be like 30*. The numbers are not right, Im just trying to explain it like that.

Place a bib on your left shoulder, coddle the car close while tapping the roof rapidly while slightly twisting side to side. That should burp it.

I suggest you go for an autometer electrical gauge to monitor the temps. A reading of A on the stock gauge can vary from one vehicle to another. On mine, the A is 215*F so M-A is 212*F (100*C). My low speed fan comes on at 208*F (M) and goes off at 198*F (O-R).

The A on mine is 209* I thought my car was getting hot I hooked it up to a scanner, and ran the crap out of it on the dyno a few days ago and it got up to 209* at the A. So i'm not too worried anymore.

Sure can!!
I wasnt until I went and had it hooked up to a scanner (cornwell handheld scanner) and my temp got up to the A, which I thought was hot, but it turned out to be 209*. Now i'm looking for the air dam thingy for the front of the car for more cooling.

My car with a/c on highway or city is n-o actually more like o. And city with no a/c it stay at m-a and at consistent WOT it will climb up to m-a from n-o. But always consistent in where it stays under the different conditions I put it under.
