How important is an oil breather.

The reason it is their (the air tube) is to help relieve or give the excessive combustion air (crankcase pressure) a place to go. So it recycles it back through the engine (emission reasons) if too much combustion builds up and has no where to go it WILL find a way to escape i.e. pvc valve (will start sucking oil up through the intake) or oil dipstick tube will keep popping out. I hope is makes sense.

Were you actually having a oil migration problem? Do you have baffled valve covers?

as said, PCV flow is bi-directional. the reason for the oil-filler to TB hose is that is uses metered air. if you run a straight breather you will be using unmetered air. do you have forced induction? that is the only time i like to see a breather (though many run them).

what i would recommend for an alternative (if the only reason you are workin on this is because of the oil in the intake): run a catch can and a filter. some have made catch cans from soup cans and run fuel filters for the filtering medium. or you can get a dedicated catch can.
