I Was Running 12* Timeing Pinging At 3/4 Throttle.
Retarded It All The Way To 8* Before It Was Ping Free
And 2 More For N20, I Am Currently Running 6* Timeing
The Motor Was Built By The Prev Owner
It Is A 306 With A Federal Mogul Cam With Non-ho 302 Fireing Order
Not 351 Order, His Reason For This.....who The F** Knows.
& Speed Pro Pistons
Ran The Juice With 6* With No Probs
But Today I Was Going Up A Hill And Had The Car Slowly Climing Rpm's, At Around 4000 I Decked It And It Detonated Violently.
I Had The Sterio On But It Didnt Sound Good. The Plugs Are New And
Two Degrees Colder Then Stock
Is My Distributor Be Off A Tooth?????
If It Is One Tooth Advanced And I Am At 6* What Is My Timing For Real, How Many * Is A Tooth? These Probs Suck Ass
Is It Internal?? Stretched Rod?
I Wanna Scrap The Motor But Cant Realy Offord It, And Im Scared To Wreck A New Motor If The Pinging Dosent Stop
Currently Trying To Solve Rich Mixture Prob On Diff Thread

lol. w/o reading the whole post im goin to tell u right now. there is no such thing as beeing a tooth off. its obviose that the timing is off and u need to fix it and dont worry about the teeth on the ditributor gear

Just a dumb question....with that cam having the non-HO firing order did you re-arrange the plug wires to match?

yes the fireing order is correct. and when you say the timing is off you mean, the chain or what? cuz the dist cant be accurate. ???

the distributor teeth dont really matter if you are pulling a 6* reading you are at six degrees.

exactly. said another way, if there was nothing around the dizzy (interferance), you could install the dizzy any way you wanted and would simply have to rotate it till it was in time. when people incorrectly refer to being off a tooth, generally they mean that they cannot rotate the dizzy enough to get the timing they desire (because the TFI is hitting the t-stat housing, etc).

if it is in time, it is in time.

a slipped outer ring on a balancer can allow one to run the wrong timing, causing detonation. there are many other causes (lack of FP, EGR malfunction, weak coil, too high a C.R. for the octane used, running too hot coolant-wise, hot intake charge, and many more).

Im with Hissin. My balancer spun on me and was off by almost 7 deg. Lucky I wasent trying to adjust the timing my buddy just happened to notice the wobbling.

Count the number of teeth on a distributor drive gear - divide 360° by the number of teeth and youhave your answer. Anybody got a distributor handy?

I cant see how being a tooth off would make any difference...

You'd turn the distributor anyway to set the timing and the only side effect I can see is the TFI module smacking the side of the t-stat elbow as you went to rotate it.

I think the car will actually run with a 180 flipped distributor. I say "run" in the loosest sense. It will just about cough and stutter but it will run a bit. I learned that the hard way.

THAT is what one tooth off means - where the TFI module winds up in relation to the factory position.

YOUR MATH IS SIMPLE YET EFFECTIVE WHY DIDNT I THINK OF THAT. NOT THAT IT MATTERS AS YOU SAID.
THE TFI MODUAL HAS NO INTERFERANCE IN ANY OF THE TIMING RANGES THAT I MAY DESIRE 4-20. IM GUESSING BY THE ENLESS LIST OF REASONS THAT CAN CAUSE DETONATION, ITS NOT EVEN THE DAMN TIMING
