Beside the obvious cube size difference, is there any big difference in peformance gains if the same parts are used?

If it has the same pistons(comp) it would be the same power. The 306 would run a little hotter tho.

So really no major reasons to bring a 302 to a 306 unless it has to be bored out because of bad sidewalls.

it makes no diff in power really, its only 4 cubes. its just to freshen up the cylinder walls to start over with fresh metal.

The average hci 302 makes a little over 1hp per cubic inch, so say 4hp. 306 is no different than a 302.

Boring it out provides fresh cylinder walls and increases compression slightly by increasing the sweeping volume.

My engine runs the same temp. (stock guage though) as it did before the rebuild.

Click the link in my signature for the differences between 302's and 306's in more detail under 302 Stroker Information.

If your looking at your old block, check and see if it has much of the stock crosshatching in the cylinder walls. A machine shop could just hone it out for you and you could reuse your old pistons! Crosshatching angle is important for oil retention on the cylinder walls, whether the engine is running or not. To steep of a crosshatching can cause more ring rotation and less oil retension on the side walls. Shallow crosshatching doesn't allow the rings to rotate enough to let go of excess heat and more blow-by can occur.
