how much fluid in an 8.8 rearend?

I think the capacity is 1.9qts. It's full when level is up to the bottom of the fill hole.

According to Brothers it needs approx 3 quarts which includes the 4 oz of friction modifer!

u cant exactly over-fill it when u fill it till the fluid come out the filler hole. when it comes out its full.

well if you fill it when its off i had it tilted back a little so its a little over.

also it wines more

true, well i wouldn think just a little over filled would hurt it right? i mean if the back of the car jacked up, thats not to much tilt.

I was going to use Mobil-1 synthetic diff fluid....do I still have to add friction modifier?? Many people told me I don't with the mobil 1.

I've tried Mobil-1 synthetic and I couldn't get the posi to work. Was told the modifier wouldn't blend right with the synthetics. Upon draining the fluid, I found that you could still see the friction modifier because it hadn't mixed very well. I switched back to conventional gear lube and everything worked fine.

For a traction loc rear Ford stresses that you use the friction modifier.

So use friction modifier.

Just don't spill it on yourself or clothes. You will stink for days.

If the friction modifier "didn't work" it would make the limited slip grab more and slip less. I don't know what happened in your rear end, but it wasn't because of the Mobil-1 oil.

BTW -- You do want to use the modifier with Mobil-1. You will want to use it with any oil unless it specifically states the modifier is already included and not necessary.

Yes -- it allows the clutches to slip more so they don't wear out as fast.

Yeah. The rear can't be locked all the time or you would find that making a turn under power would be quite hairy.

Isn't it funny how we do things sometimes because that's how Brand X says to do it, yet we have no idea why we're doing it. Case in point for me.

Yeah. This is definitely some good info. Had I known that before, I would've never used it. I use 8 clutches and pack it as tight as I can get it. I want it locked up. I want it to be as close to a spool as it can be without having to put a spool in. And since I do my own rebuilding, I'm not too concerned about how long the clutches last. But I'll keep track the next time I rebuild one and see how long they go without the modifier.
