I have a 90 GT with real basic mods including a mac in fender cold air kit. i was wondering if changing the air filter to a K&N would do anything? the filter on there came with the kit. thanks

Probably go faster if you put the stock airbox back on.

going from one cotton gauze filter to another wont likely do much.

good luck.

Maybe if you went to a bigger or better designed filter and it still wouldnt be much but every little bit counts.

K&N falls into the "tune-up" catagory over a stock filter.. the filter that came with your kit is likely not much different than a K&N and not worth changing.

mine didnt make my car louder, my headers and flowmasters did though - why would it make it louder, not really letting that much more air flow through

My car sounded like it sucked up more air.
Not like it never sounded like that before. But it did make the sound a little higher pitched. Nothing like a off-road H-pipe or X-pipe.

You know the kinda "Swooshing" sound.

most of the latter points are relatively true (a free flowing filter being a little louder [intake noise] than a stock filter in a stock inlet).
I think he has a CAI with a free flowing element and wants to know if swapping from free flowing element A (a Mac filter, i presume) to a K & N element will make an appreciable difference. i doubt it.

even on stock applications, i have my doubts. i helped a guy toss a K&N FIPK kit on his mostly stock 98GT and i could not hear a difference; he said he thought he could.

You guys have good ears, I never hear anything. I really didnt even notice the difference between my Flowmaster catback and the Mac one I have now inside the car. It is different and now I can tell, but at first I thought it sounded the same! The filter, is worth nothing, those CAIs are worth nothing (we tried one on the dyno) unless at high speeds, and I would assume its very minimal. Spend your money elsewhere!

All CAI's are for is looks. Unless you have some type of forced setup. The best you can do is just throw a K&N in the stock airbox and take out the baffle.

The MAC cone filter and the K&N filter are going to be pretty much the same thing... I doubt you'll gain anything...

K&N makes good air filters, but basically all the reuseable type air filters are close to the same. Now if you want every little extra tiny bit of power, clean your current filter and dont reoil it. This will allow more airflow......but the filter will not last as long.

another tip:
keep the air filter clean! frequiently

Neither one is better than the other. All a CAI does is clean up the engine compartment. The HP gain from a CAI is so minimal it's not even noticable.

Wow how can it be sed that cai is worth nothing! Your car is meant to be driven on the street not dyno'ed. Besides my electric fan, a cai was one of the best bang for the buck mods i did on my stang. Just my input.

CAI's net NO gain in power and have on occasion distorted the flow to the MAF creating false readings..the stock box is the BEST CAI on the market.
