How much heaver is the 351 than the 302? I am looking at options for a torque monster.

A bunch.
It's in the neiborhood of 65lbs +/-10 lbs
it also depends on what year block. the older blocks with a higher nickel content will be a bit heaveir (but not much) and 4 bolt vs 2 bolt mains.

usually it's said that if you go with aluminum heads on a 351 you get a weight very close to a stock 302.

I weighed my short blocks and it was about 75-85 lbs difference if my memory serves correctly.

Consider nitrous. There are systems that range from a few hundred dollars to a couple thousand (and even more for the crazy guys). Nitrous adds huge low-end torque when sprayed.

A 351 would definitely be a fun build, though. And if you've got the dough, you'd still always have the option of nitrousing it. Just don't come home crying to mommy when the torque-driven pressure from your spine starts rupturing internal organs.

I could be off on this one but i believe it's more like 100lbs, and to come close to 302 weight you need aluminum heads and a tubular K member. Don't worry about weight though unless you're into autocross or road racing. You won't notice 100lbs on the front of your car.

yeah the weight difference won't even phase you when compared to the additional torque at low rpm's. granted my car is a race car but at about 50mph in high gear, i can hit it and it will get sideways no replacement for displacement.
and granted u can make good power with the 302 but u are limited as far as doing future things to it, like a 347 is pretty much the max without getting a $3k race block. windsor u can start at 351 and go right on up. but really it all depends on what you want to do. i don't think the weight factor should even concern u, believe me once u get behind the wheel of that big old windsor, u will forget all about an additional 50 lbs.

I just look at 100lbs as superficial....how much does the average passenger weigh? Sure, they're not sitting over top of the front tires, but like i mentioned before that only matters when you're really concerned about weight distribution, and if you're that worried then aluminum heads, a trunk mounted battery and a tubuler K member and A arms will offset the extra weight of the engine.

Hell the typical supercharger and intercooler setup is easily 100lbs.

Ok just a few wieghts i got off of FORD RACING web site
392 stroker Z (aluminum) heads 669lbs
347 stroker Z (aluminum) heads 543lbs
5.4L S/C 837lbs
So whats the wieght difference? we are looking at 100lbs. I know that my 351w is one heavy beast. I think it as a shortblock wieghs as much as the 302 laying in my garage as a long block no intake.

There was never a 351W with four bolt mains. 351C 4V yes(even then not all of them), but the only Windsor with a four bolt bottom end is the Boss 302.

Look at it this way, the 351W has more iron in a lot of different places. The decks are taller and that's a lot of metal right there. The mains are 3.00" instead of the 302's 2.25. The bottom of the block is wider because of this, that's more iron. The main caps are wider and the crank itself has thos big 3.00" mains and is heavier. The rods are also longer....and heavier.

The weights I was able to find for Ford smallblocks were ~460lbs for an iron-headed 302 and 510-525lbs for a similarly dressed 351W.

100lbs is a tenth in the 1/4 and not to mention that this extra 100lbs is at the front of the car (which is crucial for launches) All being said and done though i wish i had done a windsor stroker instead of my 331 but im not complaining at all with my setup

Yes it is true an extra 100lbs on the nose is not a good thing but the extra torque the 351w generates makes up for it.

but a tubular k-member would allow the 351 to sit an inch closer to the rear I know I have the option on my k-member but I don't know what the difference would be with a 351???

The difference would be with wieght transfer. If the engine is moved back an inch the wieght is closer to the rear less up front so to speak to pick up. It would make a difference in the first 60 feet of a drag race for sure.

an inch makes a difference in the launch.....the closer you can get all the weight to the back the better.....or maybe the center of gravity? Im willing to guess my 331 makes more torque than equally modified standard bore/stroke 351.......or thats the way it looks when i compare the two

normally i agree with every post you make however this one no.... if you make everything else equal (even though you wouldn't) a 351 still pushes more air than you 331.... a true statement would be a stroked HCI 302 beats a stock 351. HOwever equally modded now. if they were equally modded it would be a 393w with an HCI against your 331 and ill take the 393. not to mention you could do a sick 408 or even a 427 if your brave

A fairer comparison might be between an equally-equipped 347 and 351W.

I'm surprised you guys are making this big of a deal over 100 pounds! That's NOTHING! Don't ever ride with a passenger because that's probably 150 or more, and don't ever fill your gas tank because that's even more weight! You better stay on skinnies because the average wheel is about 40lbs too.

Hey, a 351W didn't hurt the '95 Cobra R when it was waxing everyone's ass in AIX. I have a buddy who owns one and still runs the original engine.

There are many options that didn't come out of the Ford Windsor plant for a 351. I can't speak for spierce, but when I read his post I immediately assumed he wasn't suggesting any of the 4 bolt blocks did. And he's right, the 351s with 4 bolt mains are heavier.
