How much of a difference is there between the Kenne Bell 1.5 & 2.2?

I just found a killer deal locally on KB 1.5 blower, but I really have been waiting to find a good used 2.2 blower with the Flowzilla manifold. Should I settle or hold out for a 2.2?

There is a HUGE difference!

The 1.5L kit is great for a stock longblock with little to no modding. I would install the largest the throttle body the inlet would accept and swap out the H-pipe and THAT'S ABOUT IT!

You can do fuel injectors in you like but that's optional.

Just about any mods done to the motor that are more radical that what's listed above is going to put you at top end or over the max output of the blower is capable of sustaining.


Bottom line... that kit was designed for a motor that breathes like a stocker. A larger, better aspirated motor will exceed what the 1.5L kit will sustain.

Consider the displacement. 1.5 liters of air vs. 2.2 liters of air PER REVOLUTION.

It makes more sense if you think about it that way.

Hey, thanks for the info Daggar, I guess I do want the 2.2 then. I may still buy this 1.5 cause I know that the 1.5 can be upgraded to a 2.2, I just don't know how much it will cost.

The guy wants $1000 for the blower, but the snout is a little damaged. He forgot to tighten the pulley bolt after changing pulleys and it stripped, KB says only about $100 to fix it though.

The 1.5L cannot be upgraded to a 2.2L. They each have two totally different sized screws inside.

I would pass on that blower if it were me. Who knows what kinda monkey business has been done with pulley swaps etc. I'd hazard a guess that the blower has probably been over-spun a few times.

Save your nickels and dimes for a 2.2L in great condition.

The case is the exact same, you would just have to buy the 2.2 screws, but depending on price it may not even be worth it, I dunno. If I can get that thing for 1k and then the 2.2 upgrade for about 1k or so, that wouldn't be too bad for 2k or so considering they are over 3k brand new, and it would be completely rebuilt. I dunno, I'm up in the air about it cause I've seen used 2.2's go for around 2k. I may just buy it, fix the snout, and resell to make a little profit off of it. We'll see.

How are the cases the same size, but the screws in the 2.2l are bigger? Maybe I just dont quite understand roots type blowers.

As I understand it, the way the liters are guaged is by how many liters of air the screws move per revolution. So somehow the screws are just designed differently.

They're not roots blowers! lol

As for the case size, I could be wrong as I've never set them side by side but I don't think the cases are the same size either. I beleive that the 2.2L case is longer than the 1.5L case. I've seen the smaller blower upgraded to 1.7L with some porting and manifold modifications but not to a 2.2L.

As I understand it, Kenne Bell no longer sells the 1.5L for use on a 5oh. They've gone to a 2.2L with no bypass.

That raises another issue.. Even if you could swap the screws, you'd also need to modify your manifolds to integrate a bypass if you plan to push more than 7 or so, PSI.

Which one do you have Daggar, the 1.5 or 2.2? I did some researching and found that the 1.5 and 2.2 do indeed have the same case and that Kenne Bell will sell you what is needed to do the upgrade for $1500. It is the 1.7L blower and the 2.2L blower for the 2V cars are what have 2 completely different cases.

I have the 2.2L. When it came time to buy, a quick glance at the thermal efficiency charts and CFM was all that was required to make the decision. Well that and knowing full well that I was going stroker in the near future (done).
