thats an old timer rule of thumb, don't know about some of the new high 4 bangers maybe they use chome rings

any way the cross hatch on a cylinder bore is 45 to 60 degrees and finished for what type or ring you have for proper oil control on the rings, otherwise a machinist would just polish the bores like a crank

Ashford said - "if an engine doesn't use any oil that means the rings arn't getting lubed". If that's an 'old rule of thumb', I suggest it's time for a new rule or a new thumb.

My "stang" motor has 60K miles on it w/Explorer intake/pcv (same as Cobra/gt40) - uses no oil/leaks no oil/sucks no measurable oil into intake between 3K change intervals.

Wife's 62K BMW uses no oil - 5K oil change intervals.

Daughter's 95K Corolla/189K Volvo turbo - both use no oil during 3-5K oil change intervals.

Brother's 195K Mercedes S-class (87 420 SEL) uses no oil - 3k change intervals.

The Cobra/GT40/Explorer intakes use exactly the same oil trap/screen, rubber grommet, and pcv valve that the stock lower intake does - not sure why it would be any different than the stock intake in terms of pulling oil into the intake. I suspect the challenge there is that a lot of new intakes get installed by people that don't understand anything about how the pcv set up works, and they leave the screen/oil trap in the stock intake rather than transferring it to the new intake. Any intake installed without the trap will pull more oil.

I probably add about a 1 quart every 1500-2000 miles. I got a lead food and it all depends on how hard I've been driving it. In the owners manual it says it's normal to add a quart between oil changes and I'm not too far off that so I'm not worried. I've also got leaks around the rear main seal and the pvc is always sucking oil up.

I like to just check it whenver I get gas and top it off if it needs it.

ok i did some research the oil consumption (old timers rule) aplies to cast iron and ductile rings, moly coated and chrome rings require little to no oil after breakin

Still no solution to this dilemna ?

I think I'm having the same problem with my Trick Flow Track Heat intake. I'm going to confirm this through a compression test. I highly doubt it's the rings considering the block is still stock and has 31,000 miles on it. I just did the heads cam intake last summer and before this the engine didn't touch a drop of oil. Now it's using it up good !

116,000 Miles on it now and uses about a quart of Mobil 1 per 3000 Miles. Its done that ever since Ive owned it at 38,000. Some motors just burn more then others dosent always mean its leaking.

Sounds like a stocker. At 120,000 miles I'd also say you're overdue for an oil change.

There is no Ford spec on oil usage - what there used to be (when these cars were new) was a level at which they were willing to admit they probably could justify a warranty claim. But that number was more a negotiated number influenced by lawyers and accountants than anything based on a scientific assessment of how much oil an engine might use as a measure of whether it was 'in spec' or not.

Oil usage is all over the place with new and used cars. It's a function of so many variables that comparing one car to the next is like comparing apples and turnips. The main thing is assessing whether your level of consumption is causing you problems in terms of drivability, emissions, efficiency, etc. One that's burning it cause rings are tired is different than one that's leaking it is different from one that's got bad valve seals.......the list goes on. It is what it is. If it's a problem for you, diagnose the problem and it can be fixed. And if it uses a bit of oil, but there are no other symptoms, drive the car and enjoy it.

You guys made me go check my dipstick. My motor has about 62K on it - 52K since the performance parts were added. I've got 2800 miles on this oil change. The oil level is exactly at the 'full' line on the stick - precisely where it was when I put the fresh oil in it 2800 miles ago. I'm grateful on behalf of the environment that this engine's oil seems to do it's job without a desire to leave the crankcase.

When I had my oil changed when I got the car it was black. I heard synthetic cleans out the sludge, is this true?

I could see that being a possibility since synthetic doesn't sludge up.

Synthetic is known to have great detergent properties - but I'd slow down there. The question is, when one is that sludged up, if you break it lose, where's the sludge gonna go? Probably into places in the engine where little bits of carbonized oil aren't going to do anything but cause problems. If that car's been run for most of it's life on regular oil and has significant mileage, I would not change it to synthetic. You're probably asking for problems with leaks if you do - that 'sludge' does a good job of clogging up microscopic pores in gaskets/seals. Clean it out with synthetic, and they have a way of springing leaks that weren't there before. Doesn't always happen - but it happens often enough that you should be made aware.

Ok, Idont mean to steal the thread, but recently I noticed on my 84 5.0, that I was leaking oil right above the waterpump, and it looked like it was coming from the intake manifold, but I thought I was just crazy. Now I dont know what kind of intake manifold/ head combo I have, Stock? Aftermarket? I havent checked. I then read on here about pvc valves sucking up oil, and spittin it into the intake, could I have a bad intake manifold to block gasket causing it to leak oil right above my water pump? How would I check this? Maybe I am wrong, but I would rather know if this is a possibility for sure.

Mine uses, one quart every 1,000. Compression is great with new heads, pcv, etc. my car only has 18,000 original miles on it. I have been told that my oil consumption is acceptable. I expect a little to be used, but think mine consums way too much!

I usually have to add a quart inbetween oil changes. I change the oil every 3 months give or take.
