New to site but just here to help out a friend and this place looks like its full of knowledge.....Have a car I'm trying to help a friend sell......So input is very much appreciated...
Car 1969 ford mustang mach 1

Motor- 428 cobra jet originally-so the owner tells me..Motor in it now is a rebuilt 30 over 289 w/ less than 10k on it..Original motor suffered damage years ago and is long gone..Engine bay is dirty from sitting...Shaker Hood....

Transmission- 4 speed

Interior- all there, bucket seats,4 speed center console, back seat, headliner is gone, dash is not bad..All interior is dirty-mildewy..

Body- needs work, misc small dings from mad ex wife... Missing drivers - passenger side windows, again mad ex wife....Trunk lid is rotted, small misc rust spots but not too too bad from what i can see...Spoiler and rear wing are in the back seat in good resto shape...Original wheels?

Car needs restoration...Over all....mostly original minus the motor...

Car was last on road in 95, was painted in early 90's, as was the full under carriage was gone over and any rust cleaned or replaced...Car was being driven until my friend got into a nasty divorce, ex wife took a shovel and dinged up the paint and smashed out the 2 side windows..Car sat in garage this way until aprox 2002 when it was moved outside under a cover, was started religiously until last 2 yrs, the last 2 years it has sat without any cover as his interest in it faded...Was going to restore but never found the time or money...He has owned the car for aprox 23 yrs.... Now wants to sell and asked me to help him find a buyer...... so my question is how much should i ask for something like this?Fair price for both seller and buyer?
Thanks alot

Get the vin if it is a true 428 car the price is considerably more. I would like to have it either way but restoring the 67 coupe leaves me with very little cash to spend on projects. It's worth what people are willing to pay. That said I think 2 to 5 K would be fair unless the rust is worse than appears or if it is a true 428 car. Ge the Vin it will help or at least the letter code.

Where can i get the numbers from?Is it on the firewall like in most cars?Drivers - passenger side? I can get the vin, i took a pic of it but it's not too clear..Tomorrow I'll go back to the car for more info, is there other things i should look for? Thanks

Ok, i went to the car and got some numbers off of it..I could not find any ID tag under the hood so if someone can tell me where to look i'll go again...But i did get the vin number and hope someone can help me decipher it.... The vin is
9T02R216903
I also took some numbers from the inside of the door and they are.....
63c........D5..........3A...........226............11........V.......6...

Thanks for any help guys i really do appreciate it.......

I looked at an H code Mach 1 yesterday that was probably built within a few weeks of this one. It was built in NJ and sent to Boston and it's unit # was 218xxx. This car is now in San Diego and was described as a "rust free, Calif car". Upon a quick inspection I found major rust in the trunk, quarter panels and frame rails. Some rust in the doors, torque boxes, tailight panel and around the window. It had been side swiped down the full length of the driver's side. Interior was o.k. and the engine was supposedly rebuilt. Included with the car was "$7k-$10k" worth of new Ford parts for the car, per the seller. I didn't actually see the parts. Asking price was $12k. If there really is $7k in parts then the car is probably worth the additional $5k. I just don't want another rustang project. If it was an R code and the parts were worthwhile I would have bought it on the spot.

The fact that the tag says it is a true 428cj Mach 1 definately raises the value of the car, only problem with it is the fact that it is missing the motor. If it had the motor it could go for a LOT but without it, its not worth quite as much. Still a nice car and he should be able to get a decent amount of money for it.

Does the vin on the dash match the warrenty plate vin ?

If it had a motor I would say you could get 20ish k for it but without the motor and sourcing a 428scj with toploader will probably run you close to 7k You are probably looking at signifcantly less. Without seeing the actual condition in person and from the looks the car has been stored outside in the elements for a few years, a lot of work and money will be needed to bring it back to its glory, If it were me and just judging from what I can see from the pictures, I would be happy to get 8K for it. Again, it is an R code but it's really only just the shell with a shaker and midplate(still worth something but a lot more if you have the base too) and there probably will be a bunch of rust in the cowl and trunk area. It will take easily another 25k to bring the body back and proper drivetrain if you do a bunch of the work yourself too.

The vin and the tag on the door match numbers...Great so i know he was in the ballpark, he said he wanted about what you guys have said for the car ,but after looking at the car i thought that maybe he was just emotionally attached to it because it does have rust and who know's whats going to under the paint ect when it come down to it..I am just flying but what he was telling me, thats the main reason i wanted to ask you guys first what you thought....Can you guys point me in the direction of a good place to list the car besides ebay? Thanks a bunch guys :nice: .....

That's a drag pak car you've got there. I knew it before I saw the axle code. The two horns are mounted on the passenger side and I think I can see the hole on the driver's side for the oil cooler lines to come through. Do you still have the oil cooler with it? The drag pak option would raise the price of it (when restored) about 25%. It'd be really hard to tell what it's worth without seeing it but it looks like a keeper to me.

It also has the factory tach... may be part of the drag pack option. It's certainly worth restoring, but someone's gonna need a boatload of cash. It looks like most of the sheetmetal will need to be replaced. Fortunately most of it's available in reproduction now.

He said most of the original parts are in the car, there are some parts in the trunk too i believe..

Oil cooler is worth quite a bit and smog parts are unreal. Any 428CJ specific or drag pak specific parts are definately worth keeping. When restoring a car like this the small parts can break you.

Very desireable car but it's gonna take a lot to restore it.

I passed along everything you guys have told me.With that said how much do you think he could realistically ask for the car with still being fair for both buyer and seller.I know something is only worth what someone will pay for it but need some kind of starting point so i can negotiate with potential buyers...Maybe I'll take it home and clean it up a bit but i didn't want to sugar coat the car, i want potential buyers to see the truth so at the end of the day everyone is happy......:nice:
