How much would a shop charge to install heads?

Well, I had a friend not too long ago tell me that he totalled his van (like a 1994 Dodge Caravan or something) and when I asked if he was OK, he said he didn't get into a wreck, rather blew a head gasket. The mechanic told him that it would cost $800 just to replace the head gasket, which is about what the van was worth, so it was basically totalled. He instead sold it for $25... haha, you just have to know this guy. So, I would say swapping heads would cost you a small fortune at a shop, and you could buy the tools and an instructional video or take a class explaining how to do it and still come out with $500 in your pocket.

when I called for my stang, most shops said 8-12 hours of work at $90 an hour or more. So, $800 to over a grand easy. I paid a good mechanic I know on the side $500 to do the head swap in mine. He probably did a better job and was able to identify other things I needed at the same time and told me honestly what I needed to replace etc. Or, what everyone else said, you could buy tools for less if you don't have them, and do it yourself or with a friend that has knowledge and get a learning experience. I didn't have the time or patience, so I paid someone.

What, don't have a phone book????? :)

I was being 100% serious, and I think you subtley hinting that you thought I was just being a smart ass.

We can throw a million numbers out there, AND THEY ALL WILL BE 100% WRONG. The only way to get an accurate estimate is to call around. I have gotten quotes from $600 to $1000 to install a vert top in my car. Your city size and experience of the shops will change the hours quoted dramatically.

And make a note to yourself, please. The next time you attack a fellow stangnetter I will report you to a mod. We are here to help, and if you don't like my advice, ignore it. If you have done any searching on this site, you will see the tons of write-ups, and hours I spend on here to help people like you. :nonono:

The problem with your original post was that you WERE in fact being a smartass. Just b/c you help lots of people and have lots of posts does not mean you can just fire off posts that are condescending. Posting on here is an easy way to obtain information without wasting time perusing the archaic ways of the yellow pages.
