How restrictive are stock headers on 01GT?

Hi,
I just put on the MRT hpipe w/cats with a pair of two chamber flowmasters on my 01GT. The sound is awesome and the gains are impressive.

Now I'm thinking of my next mod. I was thinking about headers. Since the MRT hpipe is staying, this will eliminate the possibilty of long tube headers.

My question is, how restrictive are the stock headers and is the upside of replacing them worth the money plus installation (as I won't be installing them myself)?

What would you all recommend within the same price range to get as my next mod as opposed to getting headers?

Appreciate it

Short tube heades aren't worth the money. You'll get about 0-5 RWHP from them. LT's are the way to go- you'll pick up about 15 RWHP.

Thanks gruntman31. Maybe I'll go in the direction of a throttle body.

Take care

JBA's are worth 9rwhp N/A. BBK will be releasing some equal length shorties some time in January that should also put out similar or more power, and they are cheaper than the JBAs.

If you are going S/C in the future then shorties are a great mod. The JBA's have shown to make almost as much power as long tubes in S/C'd applications. Long tubes will always give alittle more.

In a article published by Hot Rod Magazine, they got 9rwhp and an equal anount of torque thorughout the rev range.

Long tubes make more power in every test I've ever seen.

I talked to the guys at SHM and they told me that Ford Motorsport shorties gave them an extra 5rwhp over the stock manifolds on a N/A 2V Stang.

What are your future plans as far as power adder goes?

From my understanding short tube headers will help measurably with a supercharger. And, you can install them yourself if you want to. Long tubes are hard and for most people require the removal of the K member and thus it tends to make them shy away from trying it.

I wouldn't totally give up on Shorties just yet...

Thanks for the replies...

A supercharger is definitely a future goal of mine, not sure if it will ever become a reality just because of the price. I haven't thought a whole lot about future mods. My first goal was to replace the midpipe and now that I've done that I've just been pondering what to do next or what would compliment my current mods the most within the same price range of headers.

scstanger - Please post/pm me a sound clip of your exhaust set-up. It's exactly what I want. In fact, I have a 2001 GT with 2-chmber FM Deltaflows and all I need is the MRT H-pipe w/ cats.

How did the install go? Have your check engine lights come on yet for the rear bank O2 sensors? Tell me more about this pipe! Thanks!

Describe your 1st impression of the MRT hpipe versus the stock pipe. I'm planning on getting this same pipe soon. I also noticed the new BBK shorties for the 4.6 in their catalog. I also want to get rid of my stock manifolds, but just don't want to pay the $$$$ for long tubes + install . I'm anticipating on March when I do this so who knows...by then I'll probably just break down and splurge for LTs & shorty pipe

Thanks for all the replies. I'm still replenishing my funds so I'll have some more time to decide....the bbk shorties look like something I may consider once they're released..

For BMan5150 & DCBigpimpin. I'll get together a sound clip as soon as I can. As far as the MRT H is concerened. I had a muffler shop do it, but it didn't look like they ran into any problems. I got it 3 weeks ago and have probably put 250 miles on it. Check engine light has not come on as of yet.

I love it though. It was between the MRT catted H and the Magnaflow catted X. The reason why I went with the MRT was because I was more interested in low end gains since my racing is done from stop light to stop light. It exceeded my expectations. It sounds deep, mean and loud (along with the 2 chambers), and I can feel it pull harder as well. I can only imagine how awesome the O/R one would be.
