How to adjust air/fuel ratio

Where do I adjust the air/fuel ratio?Have a feeling its off.
I just read driving with the ratio way out of wack, can eventually toast your motor!! My MAF is upside down(turned 180degrees) and Im always f@cking around with my fuel pressure. If I knew how to tune this,I think it would run alot better,so ANY HELP would be greatly appreciated!!

Dump the codes and see what the computer says is wrong…

If the mixture is off so much that the computer can't adjust it, it will set a memory code. The O2 sensors tell the computer if the mixture is rich or lean during cruse conditions. The MAF, TPS & RPM are the primary sensors used by the computer at full power.

Here's the link to dump the computer codes with only a jumper wire or paper clip and the check engine light, or test light or voltmeter. I’ve used it for years, and it works great.

IF your car is an 88 stang, you'll have to use the test lamp or voltmeter method. There is no functional check engine light on the 88's except possibly the Cali Mass Air cars.

Codes have different answers if the engine is running from the answers that it has when the engine isn't running. It helps a lot to know if you had the engine running when you ran the test.

Trouble codes are either 2 digit or 3 digit, there are no cars that use both 2 digit codes and 3 digit codes.

For those who are intimidated by all the wires & connections, see http://www.actron.com/product_detail.php?pid=16153 for what a typical hand scanner looks like. Normal retail price is about $30 or so at AutoZone or Walmart .

Yeah just keep your stock FP...if not just a couple lbs more...

Just curious but why is your MAF upside down? Have you ever did a compression check on your car...you never know...even with your low-mileage...

as said, the puter will shorten or lengthen the injector pulsewidth (so long as it is not out of the range of calibration, as JR said) to keep the A/F trimmed. so a laptop, TwEECer, chip, etc are sorta necessary to make major changes.

Just get a FP guage and a regulator. You can lean/richen the mixture by playing with the regulator. This will not make your computer very happy though and it will try to compensate for your actions.

Just get a carb. Then YOU choose the mixture manually. You can lean it out for mileage or richen for power. Good stuff. You'll never be in doubt again.

crazypete, richer wont give more power, and leaner wont always give you better economy. There is an ideal mixture, that will give you max power and economy. You will have to change the mixture often with a carb, where the EFI can compensate for changes in conditions and keep your mixture in the ideal range.

willys1, pull the codes as jrichker stated, this is where you start. Carefully cleaning the MAF sensor is not a bad plan either. What kind of gas mileage are you getting? What kind of mods do you have?

:D

Actually, I run 72 jets all 4 corners all year long. A bit lean in dead of winter and a bit rich in the blaze of summer but it always runs well. The only thing I need to play with are the idle screws on occasion.

I wouldn't suggest carb...willys drives it everyday...

What kind of gas mileage you get Willys?

He has a Kirban AFPR (I'm assuming he has a guage)...and you are setting the FP correct right?

I have to manually check it with a gauge.I was getting 21 to the gallon, but lately Im only getting 260 miles out of a tank, usually I get between 315--320.I just re-charged my K&N today,,it was black!! OK,,up side down.Last year when I bought my pro-m 75mm maf and put it on,it wouldnt idle,(when cold),would surge, and ping like a b@stard!! Mike Keirstead told me to turn the unit 180 degrees,I did and it worked like a charm :nice: I'LL wait till the weekend to pull codes. The pressure was at 32,but ever since it got cold out it was tough starting in the morning,I raised it and its fine.

You need to get that MAF problem corrected...as you know a proper "running" MAF doesn't need to be clocked 180 degrees...I have a 75mm Pro-M and mine runs fine? Mike Keirstand  ...nothing against you...

Bump your pressure up to 38-40 with the vaccum line disconnected (red) with your finger over it when the car is idling and at operating temperature...

Good Luck with it...your mph should be higher...

You get 315-320 to a tank...dang...I get 260 or so...assuming your guage/speedo/odometer isn't off that is a very nice miles/tank ratio...

Thats on the highway only, and if I keep it under 2500rpm! Then I can do it.I hardly speed except for the ride into work at 4am

Well if you ever find yourself getting advice from that piece of trash, willys, ask him to give me the money back for the heads he never sent me. I'd appreciate it.
I remember the thread you had on this subject,,dude thats f@cked up!! Hes an @sshole for doing that :notnice: I hear hes gonna make it in the majors,,soon as he does,,sue him!! Keep that thread, and print it.LOL,,you never know
