as soon as you replace the SPOUT, the puter will dial ~10* right back in. the puter advances timing ~30-40* depending upon the conditions.

For the orginal poster. If you have to get under the cars to see the timing marks. And you have everything setup correctly (timing light on plug wire #1) more then likely your balancer is FUBARed (as mine is). The 94-95 balancers are absolute junk so more then likely the outside has spun.

<-- To see timing marks correctly on my car I have to be under the car which means my balancer is off by about 180*. I don't know what my timing is set at now but it runs STRONG I turned it up till it wouldn't ping under WOT then turned it down a hair. Not the perfect way but when I get a new balaner I will do it correctly. (BTW 93 octane only if you are planning on running the timing so high)

I guess I'm stupid b/c I still don't get it. Can you adjust the timing or not? From what I gather here, when the spout goes back in, all manual adjustments that you have just made are now null & void b/c the computer overrides it back to stock.

Yes you can adjust it. You CANNOT adjust it while the spout is in.
 
The computer knows its base timing is 10*. it will add in a certain amount of timing for any given situation (from tables). but if one adjusts the base timing, it will add that delta into the total timing. so one is not adjusting any tabling, but rather shifting the phase by messing with the static timing.
 
in normal terms, you can adjust the potential, or range of teh advance. like the computer can only adjust so far, if you adjust it at idle, spout out, then that is the direct timing setting, then at like 4k plus rpm's the computer has more room to advance with.
