How to break a weld?

OK, here's the deal. One of those magnificently large magnaflow SS exhaust tips on my car sticks out about 1-1.5" further than the other. I figured, i'll just go move it back. Turns out the guy who did the install, made a mall weld on the pipes to keep it from rattling. This would be a good situation and a fine job if they had done the taillpipes at the same length. Unfortunately I now have to break the weld in order to move this thing back an inch or so. It looks really goofy and has bothered the hell out of me ever since I noticed it. I'm about to go get a metal file to see if I can get it done that way, but is there anything else I can do (note that my dremel is broken right now) to break that weld? Thanks in advance, Mark

Get your dremel fixed. You could file it, but it will take forever. Small grinder will work too!

I had a feeling that would be the answer. It's a VERY small weld so it shouldn't take too long to file down and I have all day. Thanks though.

If you can block the exhaust to keep it from moving you can break it with a chisel and a hammer, IF it is a small weld and not have to worry about your exhaust.

Try and rent a die grinder from Home Depot or a tool rental shop. That would definately do to job with ease. I suggest you wear some safety glasses.

Ok the Dremel magically fixed itself, I used the grinder attachment and ground the weld down flush then popped a screwdriver into a small gap and it popped free. After 2 hours with a hand file and numerous chisel attempts I prayed for the dremel to miraculously work and thank God it did. I was literally dancing in my driveway when it finally came free. And to think IO did all this because one taillpipe stuck out 1.5 inches further than the other I'm so OC

Edit: BTW I did remember to wear safety glasses

So how did you refasten the tip if you busted the weld off?
