How to find TDC???

With the engine all together take out the number 1 spark plug, pull the coil wire so it dont start and ether crank it over with a wrench or tape it over with a screwdriver on the solenoid. stick your finger in the # 1 spark plug hole lightly and crank it over by a wrench or by TAPING it on the solenoid.
You wil feel the compression stroke pushing on your finger, that meens that the piston is coming up on TDC, stop and look at your damper and the TDC mark should be coming up to the pointer, Wrench it up till the line is on TDC.
Done.

But I dont have a line on my damper? and dosn"t it compress on exhaust to? so how would I know which one it is?

even if you don't have a line on the damper, you should still have a timing pointer. take a piece of white chalk and scribe a line on the damper where the pointer points after finding TDC.

How do I find Top Dead Center (TDC)?

TDC is where the piston has reached its highest point in the cylinder. It is the foundation to accurate timing. To find TDC, remove the spark plug and use a plunger depth gauge to judge where TDC is. If you don't have a depth gauge, place a screwdriver thru the spark plug hole until the screwdriver rests on top of the piston. Turn the flywheel until the screwdriver reaches its highest point, make a reference mark on the flywheel and a reference point on the case. Then reverse the rotation of the flywheel, allowing the screwdriver to lower down and come back up again to its highest point. Make another reference mark on the flywheel. If the two points match up - consider yourself lucky because you have an accurate crank/connecting rod/piston assembly. If the two marks don't match up, pick the point exactly between your two reference marks (using the points closest together) - this is true TDC.

Yea, thats the way to do it. I have been using a slightly wet paper towel stuffed into the #1 Cylinder and turing it over by tapping on the Sol. in short burst as you dont want to pass TDC. As soon as you hear and see it pop out you are very close. Then you can roll the engine over with a 15/16" socket on the harmonic balancer to get to true TDC. You lucky since I am running a roller motor the S/C is right in the way of the timing marks but by doing this it fired right up. Good luck!
