I have an 88GT with hedman long tubes, no crossover of any sort, just straight back, no cats, then flowmaster 40 series as far as I know, then tails out the back. What can I do to get a louder setup? Is there a different muffler that would be louder, or should I run dumps or glasspacks or what?

Dynomax Bullets would be almost obnoxiously loud - hardly even a step down from plain ol' straight pipes.

Pypes Violators would be a good alternative.

Shorties have been said to make a exhaust setup louder. Theres a huge difference between good loud and just loud. If you have nothing to back up a loud exhaust setup its going to sound like crap. SLP's O/R mid pipe and your headers would be loud but I dont think it would sound that great. Throw a set of heads on there and all the other goodies and it will sound much better

I already have a few goodies. Lopey cam, upper and lower track heat intake. No money for heads right now.

True. My buddy's '90 notch has the same mufflers (Pypes Violators) as my '89 notch, exact same tailpipes (Dynomax 2.5" SS), and no cats, but he's running longtubes; I'm running OEM shorties, and mine puts his to shame with volume/tone. About the only thing I'd give him favor in is the fact that LT's seem to make the exhaust tone sound smoother somehow, but otherwise they're not worth the headache of working around, less ground clearance, and the starter heat-soak woes he's had with his.

Long Tubes down low will be quieter, up top will be louder... I have LTs, O/R X and dumped spintechs right now and it is MUCH louder than a shorty O/R H Flowmaster set up. Loud and good loud are way different!

get a proper H pipe and then have someone drive the car while you stand outside of it. if you do in fact have 40 series flowmasters, that thing is pretty damn loud. even with 50 series flows, lack of cats = loud.

whats with everyone wanting to be flat out loud lately?

Exactly.

First thing you should do is get a midpipe with a crossover. This won't make it louder, but it will sound a hell of a lot better and make more power. There's not very many loud mufflers that will sound good with a mild motor. Maybe Mac or Spintech or something, but don't go with SLPs, It will sound like a dump truck at idle/low rpm if you don't have the motor.

Put shorties back on it. Also, SLP makes one of the loudest catbacks I have ever heard. X-pipe on my buddies Cobra, was way louder and more raspy than my Cobra, with the same other exhaust parts.
