How to go about Special Ordering??

That's pretty much what I did. I told them what I wanted, and they said that they would check their other dealerships or order it. They found mine at another dealership and had it on the lot in about 5 days.

From what i've heard, dealerships order the ones they sell. They don't just get random mustangs.

Tell 'em what you want. If they can find it they will. If not special order it. Just be ready to have financing or a down payment ready.

Any Ford dealer should be happy to order you the Mustang you want. It's a high profit sale for them. First you walk in knowing exactly what you want, they don't have to sell you anything. Second, they have no carrying cost on your car because they know the day it arrives it's sold.

The only problem you may run into is that certain options are limited in availability. EG. only so many GT/CS options will be made, only so many 18" wheel options are available.

Just go talk to a dealer you can trust. Should be no problem at all. Mine once went almost 1,000 miles to get a car for my daughter. That's the closet they could find what she wanted in the color she wanted and equiped the way she wanted it. The only other option would have been to order it which they also would have done. Of course, I've bought so many cars from the same dealer that it's time for a free one. But any dealer worthy of your business will bend over backwards to get you what you want. And with computers, they can quickly determine what is out there no matter how far away it might be.

Special orders....

I bought my bluecar off the lot. I did an inventory search and happily my local dealer had one verrrrrry close to what I wanted as far as color, interior, and trim. The only things were the comfort group and parchment top would have been nice to have but what the hey. I also could have done without the optional machined wheels.

When I had my '01 Cobra, it was a special order and all the dealer needed was a $500 deposit. When it arrived, the fit and finish just seemed kind of yucky so you're really at the mercy of the builders on their mood or day of week that the car is made.

A car from the lot is "What you see is what you get" so you can be very picky about the sheet metal gaps, paint job quality, and how well things fit in the interior.

If you haven't already done so, you can type in different ZIP Codes within a given range of where you live and how far you are willing to travel. The reason I am saying this is your local dealer might incur transfer costs or other costs involved with sharking a car off another dealer. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I suspect my car sat on the lot for a few months because the build date said 08/06 so the dealer was happy move the car off their lot.

BTW I think the stock 18 inchers are not very attractive, not to mention $$$.

My dealer has never charged more for going to get a car. And since I have purchased many vehicles from him, I never had to pay anything up front. Checking dealers yourself by typing in a zip code is fine, except some don't update their inventory on a regular basis. Last year when Ford offered 0 percent for 72 months, I searched many zip codes and found cars listed. I even called a couple to be certain. They said sure, we have it, come on in. I told my dealer. He called them. They didn't have a thing. They just wanted me in their dealership for a likely bait and switch.
Your dealer can find out for certain what is out there, not just what's showing on the web. And then he can find out if the other dealer will let it go. Some might not for whatever reason.
Get a good dealer and stick with that dealer. You'll get better deals, help in seeking what you want and better service after the sale.
