How to remove Parking Brake Handle? Never mind...

Can someone tell me how to replace the Parking brake handle. Looking at the new one there is a screw and a metal dowel. Looking at the old one... how do you get the dowel out? 20 min in and I am comtemplating using a pair of channel locks to rip it apart... eeek. Any ideas?

Edit- I cut the old off with a knife, then ground down the metal dowel until I could pull the old handle off. Then punched the old dowel out and installed the new one using the allen screw only. No dowel... just incase the stupid thing brakes again.

You basically figured it out. There is no better way to do it other than destroy the old handle in the process. Unfortunately, the pin does not drive thru the entire handle, so there is no other way to remove it other than chisel enough of the handle off and use vise grips or something to yank it out. I went thru the same deal a few years back swapping mine out.

When I tried to replace my emergency brake handle, the original handle was already missing, but the metal piece that was inside of the handle was stuck on the shaft. I could not get the pin out of the shaft to get the metal piece off. Penetrating oil and vise grips could not budge it. I ended up using a hack saw blade to saw through the metal piece that slips over the shaft and is held on by the pin that goes through it, and then prying the piece off...

Hope this helps ya,
Yank

I used a wood-chisel (sharper) and placed it against the plastic handle at the edge of the metal bar from the back and with two raps striped out a chunk of the plastic handle. Some penetrating oil and a pair of pliers convinced the loosened remains to come off soon afterwards.
