How to replace an intake.

I have a 98 GTim doing an intake swap on. I have never touched a 4.6L and I am mostly used to the 5.0L EFI and Carb setups. Is there a guide out there for doing an intake replacement? I already have the new intake and im looking to get to work on it.. Thanks for any help!

It's just like doing a 5.0 intake in that if you keep an eye where everything goes it's a piece of cake.. only no RTV!!
If you're swapping to a PI intake you have to make sure to get the PI coolant tube that goes under the intake along with the pressed in nipple that goes behind the waterpump.

Not too hard at all if you are talking about the plastic upper intake manifold. The first one I did (on my car) took about 2 hours since I was taking my time, though it took under an hour for the second one (friends car).

Make sure you torque the manifold to whatever the directions says

Yea, the heads have little notches where the intake gaskets sit so it's pretty hard to screw up.

Don't forget to drain enough coolant so you don't end up with a temporary wet valley like me lol
Mine still held alot off coolant after it cracked..

Yeah, the gasket will already be placed on the manifold itself. Once you get everything off, you'll understand everything. The hardest part was getting it off and out, after that everything goes by really simple/quick.

If it is a FORD intake then it will not have the gaskets "built in" (but as people have mentioned, they are pretty self-explanatory once you see them). If you have a DORMAN intake then the gaskets ARE made onto the intake. If you are putting a DORMAN intake on, you don't use any gaskets, just the ones that are made onto the intake. Hope that clarifies a little ...

FWIW, it is not difficult to do. I would recommend labeling each set of bolts as you take them off and put em' in ziploc bags. If you have a digital camera, it is also a good idea to take pictures as you go (for your first time) so that if you forget exactly how something went on, you can look at the pictures. Also, clean your bolts before you put them back in and use neverseez on all of em'. It's a good idea to replace your spark plugs also, while you have the intake off because they are super easy to get to.

Finally, GDAWG has in his sig. a how to write up from when he replaced his intake manifold.

It has the gaskets built in so I assume its a DORMAN intake. I will do a look up on GDAWG for the write up. Thanks for the info. The picture and bagging bolts idea ive always practiced. Been around stangs a long time just my first taste of the 4.6L

Got it done in about 3 hours.. had to make a few trips to Autozone for stupid things we forgot like teflon and fuel rail removers but it all went through easily with out any problems. Thanks for all the input!

I think the gasket your refering to as being "built on to the intake" is the one between the intake and plenum. That one is built into the intake itself.

Had a 9 sec street car I never needed a Haynes for... install was easier then I thought on the mod motor. Just my first taste at the new stuff.

Btw, that was four years ago or something like that. And now I understand what all that stuff was so much better now... hence I'm doing my Kenne Bell install now that is much harder.
