I just purchased a new head unit to replace the Mach 460 headunit in my '02 Mustang GT. I purchase a Scosche FD1280A dask kit (Walmart.com: Scosche Ford Truck, SUV Car Stereo Installation Kit: Auto) and the Metra 70-5519 wiring harness (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350089439766). The headunit I purchase is a VR3 VRCD400-SDU (Walmart.com: Virtual Reality Sound VR3 CD Player w/ USB and Scan Disk Inputs: Auto).

I've removed the stereo to take a look at the cables connected to it. I noticed that there are three cables currently connected to me factory Mach 460 headunit. I've read many places that the only wiring harness I will need is the one that comes with the stereo, and the Metra 70-5519.

The back of the new headunit has the following connections:

Audio Out (RCA - 1 x Red + 1 x White)
Subwoofer Out (RCA - 1 x Red + 1 x White)
Antenna Socket (Standard)
Radio Plug (Headunit is packaged with the wiring harness for the headunit which connects to the Metra 70-5519)

Assuming that I have everything I need, can someone give me some input as to what exactly I need to do to install this new headunit?

First start by removing the factory sterio, then wire the vr3 harness to the metra harness, (colors should match). Then read the metra directions and plug the correct vr3 rca connectors into the metra harness this step will take place after your dash kit and mountin. Connect the completed harness to the vehicle, mount your dash kit and sterio mounting sleve. Then plug the harness and antenna into the vr3.Then read the metra directions and plug the correct vr3 rca connectors into the metra harness. Check for propper function and re-assemble your dash. Secure the radio in the mounting sleve.

I would try leaving it unplugged, then check function, I havn't completley pulled apart the 01 mach systems, so I dont know what that connecter goes to. Do you have steering wheel controls for the sterio?

I just replaced the Mach 460 from 2001 GT with a Kenwood DPX 301 last weekend. What color is the plug? Is it orange? For my mustang that was for the radio antenna. You will have to bend the wire straight to pull out the plug. Remember to the connect blue/white wire of the head unit harness to the two blue/white of the RCA harness. And connect the ground for the amps on the Metra harness to the RCA ground (2).
