I am wanting to swap in a t5 into my car. the question is there a way to tell the difference between the two? there is a mustang in a jy here that has a t5 swapped into it(tunnel was cut). the car is bastardized and a piece of junk so there is no telling what parts the person used. most likely a 4 banger t5, but is there a way to tell just in case?

If the tag is still on the trans you can use that, otherwise you can pull the trans and measure the snout of the input shaft. the 4cyl one is smaller. What is the size? I dunno.

it's easy to tell. i know only because i did the 4cy t5 swap to replace my wc t5 when it exploded. the 4cyl t5 will have an input shaft (male end for those that don't know) that will measure 14mm vs 16mm from a v8 t5. WATCH OUT though i've heard of people welding v8 input shafts onto 4cyl trannys and selling them locally & on ebay scamming folks. so be wary and watch for weld spatter or anything out of the ordinary. if ever you did get a t5 from a 4banger you can use still use it. i've had my 4cy t5 on my stang for over a year and only paid $65 bucks for it. it's starting to go but atleast it lasted a year. people forget the 89 mustang 5.0 t5 was only rated 265 lbs and a 4 banger was 240 lbs, a diff of only 25 lbs. it wasn't until 90 that t5 became 300lbs

here's the autozone bearing if you decide to use the 4cyl t5. this bearing is the correct measured fit for the v8 302 crankshaft diameter and the 4cy t5 input shaft diameter.

hope this helps
