Can anybody direct me to a good website that identifies all the subtle differences between a true 65-66 Mustang GT and a clone?

Thanks in advance.

I don't think, that if someone has replicated all the GT details, that you can tell a GT from a clone unless it's on the VIN or door tag that it has a code that wasn't offered with the GT. Maybe you already know that. Sort of the problem though, is if there is a website, people would be able to clone them and pass them off as the real deal. I imagine there are more GT's now than were originally built.

All that being said, have you checked Tom Schmidt's website to see if he has any links?

A quick "'65-'66 Mustang GT" on Google brought up this about the 4th entry down.

As messed up as that is....you are probably right. I'd love to see how those numbers fall out...

Most of the GT parts are readily avilable now, but I'm pretty sure they never made a replacment porportioning valve (non adjustable). Very tough to come by an original one.

The best way is if it has a buck tag it will have a P-10 on it for GT. These are factory GT's . There are some other things that I have found that are hard to replicate that have to do with the exaust hangers and the floor boards . But the P-10 is the easy one to spot all with all the other stuff that every fake seems to get .

That's why I got so much money on ebay for my old rusted valve...

I upgraded to power and dual master cylinder and got rid of my extra parts.

I don't have a body buck tag, but all the other info is correct. Any specific questions, I could check to verify.

Can you provide more information? I'm not in the market for 65-66 GT but a little extra knowledge is always good.

Under the rear seat there will be rectangular re-enforcements on the floor pans to support the dual exhaust hangers. One under each seat of course. A '65 GT is easier to prove because under the instrument bezel there will be a "notch" at the base of the instrument opening on the dash to accept the round speedo. All 65's except the GT had the idiot light instrument bezel and therefore did not need the "notch" on the bottom of the dash opening for the speedo. Someone wanting to duplicate this feature would have to swap a real '65 GT dash or a '66 dash into the '65.

All things considered, all of the GT stuff can be duplicated. If someone did a total resto they could put all these GT things into the car. I personaly would hesitate to pay a premium for a GT unless there was a build sheet or bill of sale to prove it's a factory.

They would have to be pretty good to punch the right stuff into the buck tag and weld in new floors the way they need to be for the muffler hangers . They would also have to put in those exaust hanger pieces through the rear frame rail . I guess you could do that with the trunk floors taken out . Then there is the way the speedo cable goes through the trans tunnel .

This is the early GT curse LOL they are every where . I would bet there are a very small number of fakes that good out there that they copy every tell tale sign .For the most part the buying public looks at the engine code the tail pipes and the fog lites .

Familiar with everything else but never heard of the speedo cable routing being different. What else can you tell me about the routing difference and why would they need to do it?
