how to test a FPR?

I'm still getting the sputtering at half throttle and occasional backfire from a stop sign but now with no codes from the CPU (not yet anyway), a buddy of mine suggested that it might be a fuel pressure regulator on its way out. Is there a way to test the regulator? I know that a gauge can be put on the schrader valve, is that something that autozone loans out?

fuel pressure tester. If something is wrong with the fuel pressure it could be due to a bad pump, or a clogged filter too, though.

pump has less than 10 or 15k on it, tank was changed at the same time. Fuel filter was changed last spring or so...
the car sits most of the winter, could i have some crud in the filter? would that be causeing my problem?
