How to tighten pulley bolt..please help

Hey...I recently installed underdrives in my 95...After the install was over..i heard this obnoxious squeeking sound coming from the engine. I realized the power steering pully moves back and forth and thats probably whats causing the noise..my question is..how do i tighten it? do i need a impact wrench? also..is it supposed to movedback and forth when i shake it?

By back and forth do you mean in and out? There is a small amount of play in the power steering pump shaft.

It happened after you put on the underdrives which is the alt, crank and waterpump pulley right? Does the belt rub anything?

Yes...i mean..towards the engine..and away from the engine..is the play in the power steering pully...do you think that would be causing the squeeking? also.. the belt slides off the smog pump after driving a little...and i have to put it back on..it just doesnt make sense to me

Check to make sure the pulley on the smog pump spins freely and it isn;t locked up. They are famous for locking up which will cause you squealing. Make sure allt he pulleys spin freely and they seem to be in alignment. Is the belt nice and tight and the tensioner is not bottomed out?

in regard to your latest post, did you do this stuff? sounds like the smog pump is seizing or you have an alignment issue, as Rick said.

the pulleys should be very aligned - they can be finicky if not (though mild misalignment usually allows some squeaking and not much more). however, if you are tossing belts, it should be hideously obvious what the problem is.

to check the pulleys, remove the belt and spin them by hand. one can use something long and straight (machinist's edge, etc) to check the alignment of the pulleys.

good luck.

unless you were Mr Universe, the crank pulley will feel like it is seized (it should not turn by hand. LOL).

i actually am mr universe...no..im just kidding sorry im a idiot...anyway..i just went outside..started her up..and it seems that every pully is spinning correctly..is the belt supposed to slide all the way back on the water pump pully? i think that is what may be causing it..i tryed to move it foward..and adjust it..but everytime i start the car ...it moves to the back....i think that may be what is throwing off the belt..and causing those hidious griding noises...what do u think? any other ideas?

a pic might help. if all the pulleys are centered, the belt should ride in the middle (or atleast no part of the belt should hang off the pulley). i have the feeling that you have a pulley not tracking true to the others or an accessory not quite aligned. good luck.

Stand beside the car and in front of the front tire. Close your weak eye and look at the pulleys and belt. Then look straight down on them from the top and the other side. The correct way is to use an edge thats straight, such as a yardstick, so you can see misalignments easily. You are looking for something that is crooked, thats what will throw your belt off. Also on the front of your tensioner there is an arrow and range that the arrow is supposed to be in. Make sure that looks right, otherwise your belt may be the wrong size.

Edit, do this with the engine off. You dont want to be in line with that belt when its running, espessially if its slinging it off right now.

You only changed 3 pulleys right? So it has to be one of those 3 pulleys that is the issue.

Compare the new pulleys to the stock pulleys you have, measure there depth and make sure they are all the same.

I was the one that helped him put these on and this is making no sense to me, everything seems aligned and normal....

When you first start it, the only thing that seems wrong is that the belt slides all the way to the back of the crankshaft pulley, the belt becomes flush with the back side of that pulley. After running it for a long while, if you check on it the belt is off the smog pump towards the rear of the car and it begins to cut the belt.

Ok so we just went back and tightened everything.

I guess this belt feels a little loose.

Heres the thing....we put on the underdrive water pump and crankshaft pulley but not the alternator pulley (to try and save the alternator from a beating. Could this have cause this belt to be a little too big.

And could the belt being a little too loose cause it to slip right to the back like that because I lined the belt up right and watched him start it and it slid right to the back and slid off the smog pump right away.

if you are out of the automatic tensioner's range, i might try a smaller belt, as you suggest.
