I tried to hijack another thread with this question but was properly ignored (as I should have been)

So am I driving a bit agressively if I'm tacking 4 grand at 85mph in 4th? I was in an accident a few months back that destroyed the differential so the body shop sent it to get rebuilt...and now it howls a bit on the rear passenger side

speaking from personal experience , if you have been in an accident and the housing has been wacked , go to a salvage yard and get a used low mileage rearend that hasnt been hit .... you might have a bent axle tube or axle shaft they didnt catch the first time , its not worth the hassle of taking it back 10 times like a friend of mine had to do with his explorer , before replacing the whole thing ......

sounds like either a bearing going out or they didnt set the ring and pinion correct.

does it go away if you give it gas, or take your foot off the gas?

I can hear it with or without pressing the gas...is this something worth worrying about if I'm planning on putting in 4.10s later on anyway?

Thanks for the replies guys...even "propellerhead" telling me to trade it in is somewhat valuable advice...but I'd have to change the exhaust back to stock before doing that...and I would only trade it in for another late used model

Im curious too... I didnt really hear mine until I got mine back on the road for emissions and stuff... I had a bent axle... and I had 4:10's installed... I wanna replace the whole rear end now with something big!!!! I am still curious for the time being what it is...

Went to my mechanic and had him listen while I drove and he told me to take it right back to the bodyshop and make them fix it right since their work is guaranteed and since the holwing is too loud and indicates that the diff is on its way to failure...40 years as a mechanic and an ex-stunt driver, I trust his judgement, and he's never been wrong about either my car or my friends' cars in the past.

Went back to the bodyshop yesterday and they said to bring it back Monday and leave it with them for 2 days. New question...if they have to change the gears, does it sound unreasonalbe for me to ask them to put 4.10s in there for me if I'm willing to pay the difference between a new set of stockers and a set of 4.10s?....oh and what extactly is entailed in having to recalibrate the speedo for such a gear?...is it time consuming and expensive? Thanks again everyone.
