wtf can i say, the university doesn't leave me w/ a whole lot of money for the car. i'm gonna have about $500 to spare for engine mods. my brother-in-law is gonna port and polish my heads and i'll probably give him $100 for it, so i'll have some cash for something other than the p/p. what could i add to that? mild cam? p/p lower intake? tb? i'm not expecting huge gains from all this, but a little added pep will be nice . thanks, gents.

Have t-moss port your lowe intake, get a used O/R h-pipe and maybe a set of heasders... I paid $100 for my headers used (shipped) then bought bolts and gaskets, then got my o/r pipe for $50 local...

You sig doesn't mention gears so with the $400.00 get a set of 3.73's.

Only $500 is very limiting. Get a set of GT-40 irons, not P's, the old style GT-40's. Otherwise you will need headers too. Have T-Moss port your stock lower if you can spare the $100. You'll need head and intake gaskets and that's really pushing your $500 budget, maybe over.

I guess I didn't read your post right. Your brother-in-law is porting your stock heads? If so, then an intake would be good. He'll need to do serious work to get good flow out of the E7's. You can pick up Explorer intakes for about $200 and another $60 for the elbow. 94/95 Cobra intakes run about $300 and you don't need an elbow. Pullies are always good, cheap too. Headers would also be good. You can pick up good used stuff on corral.net and ebay.

i agree with the gears.....3.73's for a daily driver and mostly stock....4.10's are too much for a stock 5.0

i'd honestly rather hold off on gears. aside from doing the normal tune-up stuff, i wanna beef up the engine a little more.

thanks for all the suggestions, guys. yeah, my bro-in-law is porting the stock heads and the lower intake. i'd read somewhere that adding a mild cam to stock ported heads helps--what do you guys think about that? also, if porting the stock lower intake isn't a good idea, i'll look for one off an explorer, and some long-tube headers, too. thanks, more input is welcomed.

The stock intake is amazingly restrictive, just replacing it with an explorer intake will add 20 ponies. The stock STB will not fit with a different intake, so it needs to be removed or replaced with one that will fit.

You said two things

1) Money is tight
2) Heads are gonna be off

While the heads are off I'd go with a small cam that will work nicely with your E7 mods.

While the heads are off, I'd also go with some LT's as it is cake to install them in a heads off condition.

Intakes, pulleys, and the like can be done later as money allows but while your motor is in a heads off condition, I'd take advantage of it and do the stuff that makes it easier on you in the long run and cheaper if you consider the cost of gaskets and the like.
