My 01 Mustang Buliltt makes an intermittant noise (once every day or two) when I let off the gas. Once I give it gas, it stops, otherwise it will sometimes stall. It sounds like it's coming from underneath the car. Anybody have any ideas on what it might be?

Noise usually occurs while rolling (most of the time while in gear). There is no irregular idle. Cars runs great otherwise.

2 simple things to check: Tranny fluid, and power steering fluid.
Is the noise only in certain gears? We need a bit more info

It doesn't seem to matter what gear the car is in when the noise occurs. It doesn't seem to matter what speed.

IMO, it's either the IAC or something with the transmission ... As mentioned, check your trans fluid.

very likely

if the idle drops low enough the entire car will make the noises you described. does the a/c compressor kicking on affect idle?

how many miles on the car?

The idle is okay, it doesn't get low. The A/C compressor kicking on does not affect either. Engine has 42,000 miles on it.

It stalls while you are driving it only when you let off the gas??

Does it cut off/stall?

It sounds like the IAC but your description is vague at best.

I'm certain it's the IAC. Mine was doing the exact same thing over the winter. It stopped after I changed out the IAC.
