Hurst shift linkage-toploader

While driving a 67 289/4 speed toploader with Hurst Competition Plus shifter, the pins holding the shift rods came out of one rod and my searching for a gear to use apparently knocked another off. I used a coat hanger to limp home not being able to specify a gear, but got home. I've since gotten under the car and reattached the rods with proper clips/bushings, but the tranny won't shift correctly. The best I can do is first and second. I have no reason to think it's a trans problem as it was very smooth until I went shiftless. I also aligned the shifter arms for neutral using the 1/4 inch drill bit. So, I'm thinking that the shifter rods are binding on one another(?) As I encountered the problem after losing the rod placement, I can't mimmick the original. Which way does the shift rod engage the transmission shift ear? Do they insert from the out side toward the trans body or from the trans side facing outward? And which ones?? thanks

Disconnect your shift rods and put shifter in neutral, put all the "shift ears" in neutral and reconnect like the picture.

Thanks for the feedback. Are the rods for the Hurst different than the Ford rods in arrangement as how they enter the trans ears? A great picture of what's needed by the way. thanks

How different is the Hurst linkage than a regular Ford toploader? I was under the car for quite a while trying to get the linkage back, but the rod closest to the trans on the shifter goes to the forward ear, the rod farthest from the trans on the shifter goes to the middle ear, and the middle rod goes to the ear farthest back on the trans. I tried to to insert the ends into the ears as pictured, but these are reversed. Where the photo shows the rod through ear from outside inward, mine is the opposite, and the same for the other two-where the photo shows the rods to the center and back ear from the outside-inward, mine are inside toward outside. Maybe that's just Hurst.? They don't have a diagram of the installation anywhere I could find it. As the middle ear on the trans is reverse, to adjust neutral position, does the ear go forward, backward, or dead center??
