Hurst Shifter..."Notchamatic"

Ok, I installed the Hurst shifter about a month ago, and I have to say, I love the looks, but after a month of driving it, I hate the performance! Shifts are extremely notchy..not smooth at all. Each gear goes in with a big "Kachunck". It's not the transmission, because it shifted just fine before the install. I changed the tranny fluid to Royal Purple to see if that would maybe make a difference, but it's still the same. Anybody else think this shifter is overrated? I'm thinking of going to a different shifter...any recommendations?

I like my hurst, yes it is a bit stiff. But the shifts are very direct and I love it. Mine used to rattle but after awhile it stopped the rattling.

Every aftermarket shifter you will find is a tad on the Spartan side when it comes to comfort. The goal is crisper shifts and performance parts such as this deliver.

i have the HURST shifter, and i love it. you have to remember how much shorter this is than the stock shifter. with the stock parts, the car has to meet certain NVH criteria. (noise, vibration, harshness) ALL the parts on a stock mustang are made to reduce NVH concerns. when you start adding parts for better performance, well, these add to the NVH levels.

look at the rear lower control arms. stock arms are nice and quiet, but when you add aftermarket arms with stiffer bushings to try and reduce whelhop, you add noise.

when modifiying cars, you trade comfort for performance. there is just no way around this.

i recommend this to anyone, the shifts are perfect for me. you know you are in the gears, and the throw is SO much better than stock. i have no rattles, and very little vibration. i feel thst this shifter is better than stock as far as the factory rubber bushings go. my stock shifter would move around then i hit bigger bumps in the road. they no longer do that. for that reason alone, this was money well spent for me. the shorter throws and added looks are just a bonus!!

I put my Hurst in about 2 weeks after I bought my 07 'cause I felt the stock shifter was a POS. The Hurst was stiff at first but it's gotten a lot smoother plus the fact that I'm used to it. All in all, I really like it and I have no problem power shifting with it. I did not use the ball. It did not feel positive enough with it. I installed a T handle-much more precise.:SNSign:

I agree, no doubt that the stock shifter is a sloppy POS, I'm just looking for something that's a tad smoother between shifts. I have to tug to get it into second, which sometimes actually makes the shifts slower! I don't know, maybe I've got a so-so shifter that came across the assembly line on a late friday afternoon!! I need to go underneath the car and recheck everything to make sure nothings amiss. Thanks for the feedback guys!

I don't know about yours but my Hurst was as smooth as it gets before install. Didn't you try yours? I believe the notchiness is in the tranny and was always there. It's just that the shorter throw was achieved by reducing the leverage arm and that amplified the notchy feeling. I'd bet that any shifter with the same throw will feel the same.

+1 on the T handle, it has made all the differance!

i love the feel of the hurst shift knob. i dont really feel like i need a T handle. its all personal preference.

I didn't like the feel of the notching at first after my install. It softened a hair over time. I've grown to like it though, the notching has become to me a positive engagement notifier. Where with the stock shifter it was easy to think it was engaged, but due to the long throw, you actually were not.

I like it and will stick with it as is.

When I put mine in I was suprised but not disappointed. I love the Hurst Shifter now!

I thought about a T-handle but the white knob with 'HURST' on the side looks just right.

I love my Hurst Shifter. This is my first short throw so I do not have anything to compare it to except the stock (Which is no comparison at all).

I thought it was a bit to stiff for me at first, but I have had it for about 2 weeks and about 300-400 miles and I am really loving this shifter.

Hey, I work for pro 5.0 and the reason why our shifter and Steedas shifters are more expensive is because our shifters are more expensive to make. We both use billet components through out. Our shifters are made to shift better 50,000 miles from now. We even use anodized steel on all of the wearable parts that take the most abuse. We also use a highly porous Teflon material for our center ball. It is the same material that doctors use for hip replacements because it is sooo durable. The Quality of the material also makes it self lubricating. It is permeated with Lucas grease. It took us 2 years just to decide on the best grease to use. We pride ourselves on making the best and we also commend Steeda for coming out with ever better products that help us push ourselves to the limit of technology, Materials, and craftsmanship.

Hurst for sure

I had my dealer install my Hurst shifter last Thursday, and I really like it a lot. I have noticed that the plastic part of the console on either side of the transmission is warm now after a drive.

I never noticed this before. One of the reasons I had the dealer do the install was to insure that they cant bitch about anything should the transmission go out or what ever. They added it to my 07 GT's parts list, but told me that if the shifter has a problem its between me and Hurst, except for any installation issues if any.

But I like the shifter a lot, its what I expected and if you ever had any concerns about a missed second to third power shift forget it. My car is black with white stripes with black interior so the white shifter ball looks good to to me. Really made all the difference in the world.
