Anyone on the forums running a hydroboost setup ? I'm provably going to get a hydroboost setup out of an SN95 Mustang to use in my 67.

One of the things I noticed is that the mounting flange on the hydroboost units is turned 90 degrees. Is it ok to mount the hydroboost unit 90 degrees to one side or the other or do they need to be mounted at a specific angle ? I understand the MC needs to be angled a bit in order for the brake system to work properly, I'm not worried about acheiving the proper angle there, I know I can do that, I just want to make sure the booster can still function properly with a different orientation. The reason is, I want to use my SVO MC with the hydroboost unit, I HATE the way plastic tank resiviors look under the hood...

Any input on this would be great.

Edit:
Also, what other cars came with these units from the factory ? I'm thinking about junkyarding a unit.

or, referring post,

Don't know if I am supposed to post the latter. If anyone dislikes this practice, let me know.

Good luck Rusty, seems like this is the most cost effective method I have seen...

I was definately pondering this the other day too. I think I would rather use hydroboost instead of the typical vacuume system too.

Thanks for the link, I got most of the insight I think I need. If I do put a hydroboost unit in my car I'll put the power steering back in... if I'm running the pump anyways, why not have it in there ?

Just wanted to add a little update to this. I've been kind of passively looking around at different units for a while now. It looks like a lot of companies are selling the late model Mustang hydroboost units. I have seen these mounted an different directions and I think at this point it is safe to assume that you can rotate it 360* to get it to fit or clear anything you need it to. That being said I want to check out the unit from the late 70's Fords because that one might be smaller and it will definately have SAE threads instead of metric.

Go to hrdratechbraking.com. I've been researching this for a while and if I go that way I'll use their system. $700.00 gets everything you need, new, and all lines are Aero-Quip custom buil to your car.

If you pay 700 dollars you are a sucker. The booster they use is the EXACT same booster from a late model 4.6L GT Mustang with some very minor work done to the mount bracket. You can buy that hydroboost unit off of ebay for between 100-250 including shiping. The hydrolic lines shouldn't cost more then 100 dollars total. Even if you buy steel braided lines, my guy charges like 3 bucks a foot plust a dollar a crimp plus the cost of the end. I can't imagine it would be that expensive for custom lines. IMO that kit is WAY overpriced. I think its worth 450. 700 dollars is highway robery. I see they are charging quite a bit for the lines since the kit without the lines only runs 525.

When seting up a hydroboost it is important to have 2 return ports on the pump (if you have power steering as well). They don't include a pump in that kit. The mild amount of fabrication they have done does not impress me at all.

66 with hydro boost

I have a 66 Mustang with a hydro boost from Hydra Tech Braking.

Call Paul. Paul is the best in the business. He's well worth the extra few hundred dollars.

I'm running C5 Corvette brakes and my 306 doesn't have near enough vacuum
to run large diameter disc brakes. Kind of a home made Baer up graded kit.

Due to the Mustang shock tower I used A 2000 Camaro master due to it's short overall length.

I added a Wilwood brake balancer to the rear brakes.

It will scare you how well it brakes. At least it did my wife.

If anyone is at the St.Cloud MN show this weekend I will be happy to yap!

Jim

I can buy the same parts hydratech sells brand new from a parts house cheaper. The only difference will be the mount flange and the little bracket for the brake pedal. It is not a super special unique product and I think they should drop the price to something reasonable. I understand everyone needs to make a profit, I have my own small business myself. All I'm saying is that just because your product is made to fit my car with no "extra work" (and there always is) I shouldn't have to pay a huge premium for that convienence. I would understand the high cost IF there was some major fab work done, but this kit only has some very minimal extra work done to it.

both

and with any product you are also paying for R&D and his time for rounding everything up.. by the tim you pay shipping from 3-4 vendors on parts you will probably be 200-250 short of his price and still not have the mount that he makes and have to do everything himself.

TCP sure doesnt have nearly what they want for their products in materials but you pay for R&D and convenince

Well, I'm not a sucker. But I am willing and can afford to pay someone who has done all the foot work and research to put together a system that is NEW with quality parts, test it (BTDT..too damn old for it now), package it and be available to help should I have a problem. I'm not in the business of designing and selling anything so why sould I go through all that trouuble. Which is preciesely why my 30 year old XLCH is at Pete Hills for a new close ratio transmission rather then me doing it in my garage and having to deal with mail order parts and not having what I need when I need it. But that is just me. You obviously are differrent.

I spoke with him and he said they generated 1.2 g's braking with stock Mustang discs and the hydra boost vs. something like .7 or .8 before the install. Does this sound like what you experienced?
If these numbers are true you should be able to just upgrade your calipers to some aluminum 4 pistons with slotted rotors and save having to go to 17" wheels/tires. (I happen to like the look of 215/60-15 Comp T/A's on a 65...I think the car needs about that amount of side wall...but I'm 58 and most of ya'll are a lot younger)

Hyrdo boost

I know I sound like a poster boy for Paul at hydra tech but he really does know his stuff.

Disc brakes need line pressure pure and simple. The hydro boost does just that.

I'm thinking most 3/4 ton trucks it comes standard.

I know $700 is not cheap but my time is worth something.

The braking is truly impressive. I'm not sure about smaller diameter discs but I did a 67 Nova with 12 discs and the hydro boost worked great.

If you know how to post photos I will send you pics of the car.

I had the car at the Craft Nationals in St.Paul in July and they shot it for feature in the magazine. Even did the "rig" shot. I'm hoping for the cover. Time will tell.

Jim

I wasn't able to PM you, said your box is full. If you do have the booster setup I'd very much like to get it from you.

I concur that Paul is the best in the business when it comes to his parts. Plenty of after the sale support, extremely knowledgeable, and R&D to make sure it works right. To me, that alone easily warrants the extra price.
