Check with the cam manufacturer (whatever you decide) as to what springs to run with their cam. Who's assembling the motor?

me and my dad is assembling the motor he has had some hellacious cars, 66 stang that ran 12's 69 gt that ran low 13's a and numerous trucks. Michael, my dad said that he has always had good luck with crane cams how does the 2020 grind sound? .530 .530 lift 208, 216 duration how streetable will this be? powerband is 1500 -5500 also what is a 3/4 cam? dad said, is it like that? and i said what is a 3/4 cam?

Tell your dad things have changed.....especially if he's still calling it a 3/4 cam. CompCams XE258 instead of that Crane grind - or let Buddy make you a custom -- your dad's card can afford it. Oh yeah, tell him you heard it from an 'old' guy on the forum...

i will tell him that, i dont know what this website would be w/o you. You help young people like me everyday. anyways what is the difference between the comp and the crane? the comp has a split lift and a little more lift but that is all i can see is there anything i am missing?

If you want to go custom grind I had one done for $260. It may take a few days to get the core in though. They do mostly SBC cams.

Call their tech people and tell them the rest of your set up, see what they say. Do the same with Crane - see what they say - then decide. Others have mentioned other makes that folks really seem to like - Crower and Lunati.

But I think I addressed it in reponse to your pm. I wouldn't do any of the 3 - I'd order a custom.

I agree with Michael. Out of the box cams really don't do it for me. If I had to do it all over agian I'd go with one of Ed's cams. I didn't have the $325 to get one though. Now I wish I would have spend the extra money. You get what you pay for.

i will call them today when i get home or on my lunch break, I will look into a custom cam but i cant promise anything because that is almost an extra $100 thanks michael

it cost me 500 bucks to bore the block.060 over and put new cam bearings and freeze plugs in and also do a 3 angle valve job and all of that good stuff, plus new speed pro hyper coated pistons. all of this for 500. i think it was good.

well i called comp and crane well the crane guy was a jerk. I talked to the comp guy for about 10 minutes. He recommended the xe258hr, should i have any piston to valve clearance problems? i know every motor is different. And i will check but i would like to know ahead of time Also is this a pretty healthy cam?

I think I mentioned the XE258 and XE264 in my pm to you. The 258 is a good stock replacement cam - probably he was responding to your requests that it be very drivable. That cam will work well with the stock heads and the new bigger heads will really wake things up.

You need to measure p to v - no other way to tell.

yea michael i was going to pm you and say thanks for sending me in that direction by my Pm wouldnt work, but anyways i know i will need new springs so what ones do you recommend i really dont need double springs either. Can someone give me part numbers?

The CompCams folks will recommend what springs to run with whichever cam you pick...

well we got the motor tore apart. It is suprisingly in good condition. All of the head gaskets were in place and the pistons look very well. The rings on the other hand were shot. Going to the machine shop tomorrow and the new stuff is getting ordered from summit tomorrow thought i would let you guys know thanks to all that applied. Especialiy MIchael Yaunt thank you so much
