am I a sped?

i cant get my covers to my my goddamn brake drums back on. i wrestled with the damn thing still wont go on. and i have to get the wheels on so i can take my car out of my garage so the flatbed can pick it up (things went extremely south with my gear installation)

Are you refering to the brake drums? Use a flathead screwdriver to turn the brake adjuster (the star wheel) to retract the shoes. It should make it easier to reinstall them.

Can you please be more specific by your phrase "went extremely south"...I'm very curious...

And call me thick but I'm just not understanding "I am I a sped"...

I wasn't catching the subject line either... But you should be able to adjust those brake shoes down to get the drum over them.

the problem with my gears was that my pinion yoke wouldnt go all the way down on my pinion gear, and i threw it in in the oven (yoke) to see how it would fit, it went all the way down and i couldnt get it up so i try to hammer the gear (bad move because i accidential did it when the nut was on) so the threads got ****ed up but i managed to fix the threads. i put in the pinion gear but the yokke still wouldnt fit all the way so i shove it in the oven again but this time it didnt go all the way down and so when it came time to measruments everything was off. the yoke has play were it moves back and forth so im gunna have a flat bed pick it up and have a place redo my measurements. i cant imagine it costing as much since all bearings and seals are already on they need to just fix the damn yoke and measure it (pinion depth, backlash,run-out)

Wow. That's a term I haven't heard since high school...

SPED = "Specially Educated," shortbus material, window-lickers, reh-taw-did, etc.

As far as getting the drums back on go, before you put all the springs and such together, screw the star adjuster all the way in so the shoes are fully retracted. Also, make sure your e-brake isn't on. (Sounds silly, but I've forgotten it before, had the same problem.) The drum should, in theory, just plop right on there. Then give the brake pedal a few pushes and the e-brake handle a few tugs and releases, and/or poke a flathead screwdriver or brake spoon through the adjuster hole to set the brake adjuster back into position.

Also make sure you check that the top of the brake shoes are resting on the post that sticks out on top. If they are not sitting on there all the way then your e-brake is either on or cables are not leting it release all the way. you can pry back the e-brake arm behind the shoe if the cable is stuck, Good luck.

i never took off the brakes just the cover to the drums, and disassmebled the axle

im not laughing at you at all....just the way you said it. i wouldnt know how to set the backlash and depth either. hope everything works out though.

i did know but the pinion yoke wouldnt go all the way down on my pinion gear, i had the correct pinion depth so when is came time for back lash the pinion gear still had play in it when it was measured

This is exactly why I bought a hydraulic press and bearing splitter. I didn't want to get stuck with a half build rear-end. Plus I've done 4 rearends since for club members and friends. Kinda nice to have the right tools for once. I generally have two sizes of tools: Too small or Too large!

would not have made a difference, i have a press............ when the pinion is in the housing, and the flange will not fit down far enough, a press does not do jack sh1t for ya.

he should return the pos's to the place he bought em.

How do you know the yoke is not on as far as it can be? Because there is still in and out play in the pinion? That just means you need to tighten the pinion nut and crush the crush sleeve. I just put gears in two weeks ago, and mine way the same way - the pinion nut got real tight, but the pinion had about 1/8" of in-and-out play in it. Turns out I had to hang from a 2-foot breaker bar to get it to the proper preload. That works out to be like 300 ft-lbs. The nut will pull the yoke on easily; when it bottoms out and there's play left in the pinion, CRUSH the SLEEVE!

Sorry, but I learned this the hard way because this was the first rear I had ever done. The Ford spec of minimum 140ft-lbs for crushing the sleeve is . Although, it coulda been because I used a Motive Gear install kit, which is where I got the sleeve from. So, it wasn't a Ford sleeve. What kind did you use?

i actually got the rear end together but my pinion depth is off so im gunna take it to a shop to have it remeasured, but to the point, the problem i had was that there was apparently a phosphate coating on the spindles of the gear so i had to hit it with a dremel tool(with a wire brush) to get if off, then i installed the gear with the yoke and gave it a good tap with a large socket and got it on
