Ok, i have a serious problem with my car. Im already prepared for the worst. I know something is really really wrong with my car and my parents dont wanna listen to me. You can hear this "tick tick tick" and it speeds up the faster i go. i pulled allllll the plugs and my #4 was freaking coated in a nice oil deposit. and to top it off, thats where the ticking is coming from. right over the #4. im burning oil in higher rpms so im thinking either my valve guides are F'ed or my piston ring is. any suggestions???

I could be wrong, but I believe that second piston rings are gapped tighter than the top rings, which would help the oil ring if anything were to get past it. I don't think you could tell it were an oil ring without pulling the piston out.

Can you turn the motor over by hand and still hear that same noise? If so, I'd pull the top part of the motor apart down to the valve covers and look to see if maybe a rocker arm got knocked around and isn't on the valve tip anymore.

I was thinking of a rocker arm myself... Check to see if it smokes though

The reason I was thinking oil ring is because a buddy of mine with a 95 GT vert just had his 78k mile motor torn down because it would blow a nice cloud of blue smoke -- but only a wide open throttle. Compression test didn't show anything. But when the motor was torn down the oil ring for one of the pistons fell off in two pieces. Oops .

Use a compression tester and check the compression in several other cylinders (for reference, preferabily the ones that are easy to get to) and then check the #4 cylinder and see how compression is in there. If compression is ok then its probably not the rings. Another ting you can do is take off the upper manifold and pop off the valve cover. Maybe then you can see whats up if its a head problem. My guess is that its a head problem, unless your blowing smoke from your tailpipes (which you dodnt mention anything about).

Oh and another thing is that rings dont tick, so thats another reason I think its a head problem.

Me also b/c 58K is low mileage. I have torn my motor down 4 times in the last few months and I have 160K hard dawg beaten miles on mine hitting the rev limiter often and never had a problem with rings or valves, etc. I will say that everytime I re-torque on the rocker arms my car gets quieter and quieter under the valve covers to where it is near silent. Pull your covers and check you rockers and it won't take you that long. I torqued mine down to just 18 lbs and that has been perfect for me.

take the elbow off and pull the valve cover.

check if you can see bubbles of oil come out of the valve stem when you coat it while cranking the engine.

it sometimes works, the best one is to use the "leakdown" meathod.

goodluck man.

dunno wut else to tell ya, lots of things can tick.

Yeah get in there and check the valve train. A tick is almost always associated with that. Matbe a broken rr, or spring. I had a broken spring retainer that caused me some seriousl problems a while ago.

Mine makes a ticking as well but runs fine. I am sure it is in the valve train somewhere. Go in there and torque everything to spec and see if it goes away. Does it smoke at all?

EDIT: Could be blow-by though because of the oil on the plug.

$75 isn't a ton of money so your luck aint all that bad. still i wouldn't like to shell that out. You can't work on it at ur parent's or are they at the apartment too? any mechanically inclined buddies?

my parents live all the way up in the Washington D.C. area, im here by Charlotte NC. i dont have any buddies around here yet, but im looking. 75 bones isnt a fortune, but i have yet to find a job here. I have about 1500 saved up only to be able to pay bills until i can find a job, so money is tighter than my dads grip on his money.

yeah, my long term goal is to have a mustang dyno shop. Im currently working on getting picked up by a NASCAR team to be an engine builder. Im going to be in Mercedes E.L.I.T.E. program so there is my fallback plan.
