I broke a rear lug....help

I was taking off my rear tire and one of the lug nuts was harder than usual to remove, in the process the lug and lug nut completely broke off. Now I have to fix it, is there anyone who's had this happen to them? Was it an easy fix or should I take it to a shop to have fixed? TIA

You should be able to either rent a tool to push the stud out or just pound it out with a 2lb hammer. New studs are like $5 from the auto parts store, and to install a new stud just slip it through the backside of the axle face and slip a junk socket over it then you can tighten a lug nut with a wrench to pull the stud through the axle face. Be sure you have something between the axle face and the lug nut though (such as an old socket or some kind of round spacer), otherwise you risk f'ing up the threads.

Its easy....take a hammer and tap the remainder out. Then get a new stud and press it in from the back. Tighten a lug on it to pull it all the way threw. I know i suck at giving clear directions.

Dumb question, do I need to take off the rear brake and disk?

You don't have to if you're able to get the dust cover off. The rear brakes are really easy to remove though and it would be much easier if they were out of the way along with the rotor.

For safety's sake, I'd replace them all on that axle. If one was compromised, the others may be, as well. Studs are cheap, cars are not.

I disagree, if his lug nut was seized to the stud and it was simply a matter of over wrenching on it, the integrity of the remaining studs is likely fine. I guess we probably don't know enough about the rest of the studs to say for sure, but its a good question no less.

Good advise, but this one broke because it was giving trouble to come off and I took it off by force.

Another question, are all studs one standard size? Or is there a particular size I need to ask for when buying them? TIA

Just go to your local parts store and they'll get what you need. I don't remember the bolt size off hand, but they can look it up in their computer

Edit: looks like they are 1/2" - 20 thread

lol A tech at the tire shop destroyed mine when he was taking my wheel off. Then when he went to replace it, they had rounded out the hole in the hub. So he then had to replace the entire hub.

It's not hard to replace though.
