I've been screwing around with this all day on the mustang I just bought. Its a 67 289 2bbl.

I was driving it and I didnt think about it since the volt guage looked fine. Little did I realize it was broken and the battery wasn't being charged. So the car left me stranded on the side of the expressway with a dead battery.

I've screwed with the wiring, (can't find a good schematic for the life of me, and chiltons doesn't even seem to match mine).

Anyone know where I can find a good wiring schematic, or if it was easier coudl I just change it to a one wire setup?

First clean and check the connections.
If the voltage reg is old style,(non elec)
remove cover and use a ladys nailfile on the points
inside. Old Redneck trick when the reg sticks.

Then with eng at above 1200 rpm,
remove neg cable. If it still runs the Charging system is working,
but you need to test it under a load to see if it's enough.

Everything is wired up and I still got nothing.

Is there anyway of testing the voltage regulator to see if it works, or even testing the alternator? I am stumped on this one

well I wired a lead from the hot wire that goes into the voltage regulator(yellow) to the white field wire on the back of the alternator and I started charging!

I got a new voltage reg. plugged everything back up and...nothing.

So what is left for me to check on this POS?

......Open in Field wire in harness or connector ends?

Its only about 2 feet long and its location takes a beating.

I had a similar problem on my 72. I thought everything was fine and dandy, but on the way to a cruise, right in front of my in-laws house it died and would not restart. Battery was stone dead. I found there was a bad wire in the harness from the altenator to the voltage regulator. it was frayed at the voltage reg connection and only like one or two stands of wire were still connected. I agree with pabear, check that harness. real simple to replace, took me about 5 minutes

all I gotta say is thank god for PO's and their awesome wiring skills. IF they knew how to do things right I would be out of the hobby and would never have anything to work on.

I ended up tearing the WHOLE wiring harness apart from the voltage regulator on, and some dip**** spliced the wires from the voltage regulator to the wrong wires.
