Went to replace the taillight lenses, bezels, gaskets,etc... on my 67 and found rust. The rust on the inside of the body is not bad and can be sanded and repainted. The taillight housing is another story. The housing actually is two pieces riveted together at the factory. The rust extends under the riveted part.
My two options are buy new ones for $35.00 a piece plus shipping or restify the old ones.
As far as the old ones go, I wonder if I could drill the rivets out, sandblast, and recoat them with paint. Afterwards I would use a sealant and new rivets to prevent a repeat rusting event.
If I get new ones there is the possibility that rust will form and get in between the pieces again. I could put some silicone sealant around the edge but it probably wouldn't completely seal.
What's everybodys thought on this?
