I don't have the canister purge solenoid hooked up, what would that affect?

It depends upon what you did to the system. You could be doing anything from venting vapor to atmosphere and creating a vac leak to bottlenecking the EVAP.
Post up what exactly you did with regard to capping lines and so forth.
