First is what kind of gas do you guys run in your mustangs?do you run the cheapest or premium? Does it make a difference in these engines?(mines a 289). Also sometimes when i give it some gas(like going up a hill) I can smell the exhaust in the cab and sometimes see it. It looks like its coming out of the steering wheel. What could be causing this?
thanks

I use the cheap stuff in my 289. I am told to use the cheap stuff on the older engines. Maybe I shouldn;t though as it is very new.

I smell exhaust too. I love it!!!!!

As far as seeing it...... That is a bit strange. The only thing I can think of there is check where your exhaust connects to your headers and verify they are sealed. Might check the headers at the motor too but you would hear that and notice a power loss if there was a leak up there.

Mine burns 87 from whatever station is the least expensive. The fuel grade you need to use depends on the compression and timing of your engine, not the age. An SOHC 427 from 1966 will be hard pressed to run ping-free on modern "premium" since it had something like 11.5 or 12:1 compression out of the box. Back then you could easily get pump 100.

Yes, Over Head Cam.

an SOHC 427 was a special order option back in the mid to late '60s. The dual quad was rated at 657hp stock.

So, why did it take so long to become standardized?
Until CNC machining started coming into common use, OHC heads were alot more expensive to produce. They have their advantages, but it baffles me as to why everyone is abandoning pushrods for production applications. They really shine when you need to control more than 2 valves per cylinder or vary the valves' timing independently. That makes me wonder if there is actually a point to having a 16v SOHC 4.6L.
