First is what kind of gas do you guys run in your mustangs?do you run the cheapest or premium? Does it make a difference in these engines?(mines a 289). Also sometimes when i give it some gas(like going up a hill) I can smell the exhaust in the cab and sometimes see it. It looks like its coming out of the steering wheel. What could be causing this?
thanks

I use the cheap stuff in my 289. I am told to use the cheap stuff on the older engines. Maybe I shouldn;t though as it is very new.

I smell exhaust too. I love it!!!!!

As far as seeing it...... That is a bit strange. The only thing I can think of there is check where your exhaust connects to your headers and verify they are sealed. Might check the headers at the motor too but you would hear that and notice a power loss if there was a leak up there.

The smoke sounds like a missing/busted firewall plug or seal. Why not run the cheap stuff anyway?

Mine burns 87 from whatever station is the least expensive. The fuel grade you need to use depends on the compression and timing of your engine, not the age. An SOHC 427 from 1966 will be hard pressed to run ping-free on modern "premium" since it had something like 11.5 or 12:1 compression out of the box. Back then you could easily get pump 100.

I cannot run 87 in my 67 if I am doing hard charging in it. As the cylinders heat up I start getting preignition. But regular driving is fine. 89 octane is usually enough.

run the lowest octane you can without detonation. anything more is a waste of money. as far as the smoke goes, i agree you have some firewall sealing issues.

um, yeah, there were. OHC engines have been around since the early 1900s.

That is it right there. The gas companies try to sell you all kinds of BS to spend more money.

dude just use chevrons regular pump gas. I used other cheap gas and my cars performance decreased and so did the gas mileage. Mobile 1 is also pretty good.

Yes, Over Head Cam.

an SOHC 427 was a special order option back in the mid to late '60s. The dual quad was rated at 657hp stock.

Well then I geuss you learn something new everyday. I thought OHC was relatively new technology. So, why did it take so long to become standardized?

Jaguar had DOHC already in the late 60`s...

as example: Jaguar XK120 or is this a wrong information?

Until CNC machining started coming into common use, OHC heads were alot more expensive to produce. They have their advantages, but it baffles me as to why everyone is abandoning pushrods for production applications. They really shine when you need to control more than 2 valves per cylinder or vary the valves' timing independently. That makes me wonder if there is actually a point to having a 16v SOHC 4.6L.

It's more of an assembly/sub-assembly production line module issue.
