I have a question about the skip shift in our cars

Part of her shifting issue may be trying to force it to much. The gates are much closer in these than older trannys. Tell her to lighten her grip on the shift lever and let it do the work more. They shift real easy.

The skip shift forces one to shift from 1st to 4th when in the 1700 to 1800 rpm range (or close to it) when doing a gentle acceleration....like granny driving it..... Most of the time, it is not noticeable but I found the car lugging and kept wondering why I was in 4th. Thought I had forgot how to shift after 50 years of driving. Since unplugging it, I like the tranny and shifting much better.

You know what? That is exactly what she is telling me. She can't seem to figure out what gear she is in, due to the fact they are close. I will tell her to lighten it up and feel it thru! Will the dealership unplug the switch if i request it? Thanks for the advice!

I doubt the dealer would but one never knows. It is a simple task if there is someone who can get the car up and do it for her. Where is she located?

I got the strange feeling they won't do it either. Had a friend drive it and stated that it shifted fine. He said it felt a little bit ruff on 2 and 3 but didn't seem to interupt his shifting. It maybe good to go, but still I need to drive it before I make a decision. I will get it on jacks when I return and pull the plug on it myself.

Question:
What is the max size tires and rims can I put on the mustang without it rubbing on the inside of the fender? What is your opinion? Not thinking about lowering it, but if I do, how low should I lower it without losing performance on the suspension and what lowering brand kit should I use? 2011 Mustng GT.

Best bet there is to check with the wheel and tire shops on line. I believe you can go 10" wide on the rear but I am still running stocks....

I'm going to unplug mine next tine its on jacks, but i never really use 2nd inless i'm really driving hard. Even with 3.31 gears with the gear ratios so close on this transmission 1-3 shifts work great for normal driving. I'd say 2nd and 4th are the least used gears in my car

Congrats on the new Mustang! It's gotta be tough not being able to drive it yet. The shifting strategy below may help your wife feel more comfortable once she gets used to the position of the gears.

Upshifts when accelerating (recommended for best fuel economy):

Shift from (When not in skip shift mode):
1 - 2 17 mph
2 - 3 25 mph
3 - 4 40 mph
4 - 5 45 mph
5 - 6 50 mph

Shift from (When skip shift mode active):
1-4 17 mph
4-5 25 mph
5-6 40 mph

Everyone else, I don't believe the dealer will be able to remove skip shift, but they will be able to discuss the possibility.

Natasha, Thanks for the update. Will definately give it a try. I'm pretty sure all is well and not to concerned about the stick shift and transmission issues. But, will definately be following if this becomes a recall issue.

Just curious...but who buys a 412 hp car and then worries about gas mileage? If you want to save gas the skip shift should help, if you drive the car like it was meant to be driven you will never notice it. Mine has never been an issue even in heavy traffic. It has never "forced" me to do anything.

This has been the case for me as well. I had an '06 GTO and the shift skip in that would no BS keep you from going to 2nd unless you went to neutral first but in the Mustang, if I really want to go to 2nd, it will allow me to do so. The implementation is much better than the Camaro, Corvette, GTO iteration thankfully. Where I never used it in the GTO and it actually pissed me off, I do occasionally use it in the Mustang.

It's not about saving gas, it's about getting around a tax and you should all appreciate that.

"Proponents of the skip-shift system argue that if the system helps to reduce the gas-guzzler tax, then it's cool since it saves the customer some cash. However, the Mustang isn't even close to the gas guzzler tax threshold -- which is based on "unadjusted" mpg values rather than the window sticker mpg -- and probably still wouldn't be subject to the tax even in the absence of the skip-shift.
I can only conclude that the purpose of the skip-shift in the Mustang is that it helps alleviate Ford's CAFE requirement, and nothing more."
