A couple weeks ago, or thereabout I posted an ad for some wheels I won't need.
http://classifieds.stangnet.com/showproduct.php?product=44568&cat=8
Last week I got an email from someone who I could tell was not American but sounded interested in the wheels. I told her to let me know her zipcode and I would figure out what shipping would be so I could come up with a final dollar amount. Then last night I got this email from her:
Hello David Claflin,

Am okay with the price ($600) present condition as well as the look on the picture... I'll be offering you ($100) for it and that makes a total of of ($700)..I would really appreciate it if you can get back to me with your full details so i could order my secretary to send out a payment check for the amount of ($4750) which will be covering the shipping cost because the shipping firm will be picking it up alongside with some other goods that are to be shipped for me in the state.
Get back to me with full details.
YOU R NAME IN FULL...............
CONTACT ADDRESS....
CITY.....

Pls do not bother about any other buyer, i believe things will work as plan. Concerning the pick up i've arrange that with my shipping firm because they are picking it up along with other goods that are to be shipped for me in the state. All you need to do is to get the check cashed immediately you do receive the payment check ,deduct the total cost and get the remainning fund send to the shipping firm sameday so that they could leave for your location to arrange for the pick up.Await Your Quick response ASAP...

I'm reading this and the first thing that came to mind was the Nigerian bank deal. I tried sending an email to the help@stangnet who send me emails about the ad but have not gotten any response. So....I figured why not post the email and address here so you guys could have some fun with it if you wanted.

I got one of those once. I told him I was Fred Flinstone, living in bedrock at the house next to Barney Rubble.

I didn't get my money though. Wonder why?

A lot of people fall for stupid schemes, primarily because the world is full of stupid people. Why else would be so damned pervasive throughout the 'Net, if it didn't snag an idiot or two every now and then?

You'd be amazed how many people fall for this. They rake in millions.
Sending **** to their email won't do a thing. They have hundreds of email accounts, and I highly doubt they care.

In case no one knows..

Item you're selling = $100
They send a check for $1000 (example), and ask you to send the change ($900) to Nigeria or something. Their check turns out to be counterfeit, and you can't get your $900 back because it's in a place with virtually no laws.

yup people fall for it all the time. i help work these types of cases when it involves the U.S. Mail. [currently interning with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service - which is basicially the law enforcement side of the postal service that no one has heard about, but we're federal agents just like the FBI, DEA, etc.] its pretty interesting what type of schemes they(mostly Nigerians) come up with. in fact we hit 5 houses in the atlanta area about 2 weeks ago with another type of Nigerian Fraud case.

My wife is a teller at the local credit union, she said that peopl will bring in these checks all the time. The credit union is just holding them now to see if they clear. People whine when they can't get their money right away but later they are grateful.

Hello ,
Thanks for the mail, I am okay with the price ,So i will be paying you via a cheque.Am going to issue you the Payment of $3650.Once you recieve the Payment from me,All what you have to do is deduct your selling price from the funds and then send the remaining funds to my collector i could have been in- charge of the shipment, but due to my absence at state at the moment, that can not be possible. You are not to worry about Shipping,I have a reputable collector Company that i have been using for long,so i am sure they will Ship the Item right to the destination i want it shipped. The remaining excess funds should be sent to the collector Company via Western Union Money Transfer and the charges to get Funds transfered to them should be deduct from the funds you are sending to them ( collector Company). so the total amount of money left is $3000. I will want you to provide me with the following details needed for the Payment to get to you :
FULL NAME ON THE CHEQUE::
ADDRESS:
STATE:
CITY:
COUNTRY:
ZIP CODE:
YOUR ASKING PRICE:
PHONE NUMBER:
MOBILE NUMBER:
Will await to read from you soonest with the details needed immeidately,so as to facilitate the pace of the transaction.I will wait until the payment clear in your bank and we proceed Regard's

Yes, yes... both have been banned (for all the good it does)... and yes... there are an INCREDIBLE number of stupid people out there that fall for this sort of scam. I imagine that we'll continue to see stuff like this until folks wise up.
