I have a 92 convert. came stock with the 4 cyl and automatic transmission, and it has 3.73 gearing in the 7.5... i found this to be odd, didnt they use numerically lower gearing for automatics??? maybe I am wrong and have the same as everyone else... let me know so i can sleep at night.. heh, thanks to all...

(It is conventional, not the locking rearend)

MOST automatic 2.3 cars got 373s. 5spds got 345s. Dont complain the 373s are about the best all around you can have.

Yes he is right it would make more sense the opposite, but I guess the higher gears help the less power cars get going. I too thought it strange that 4cyl have more ideal gearing than 8cyl but it is true. That is not true about 5 speeds 2.73 or 3.08 optional. I was told.

the reason for the higher gear is that the manuals are 5 speeds and the autos are 4 speeds, 2nd gear in the manual is the same ratio as first gear in the auto, so the autos need a little more help getting up to speed than the manuals do. That and the residual drive tran power loss associated with ALL automatics.

So what gears are you saying stock 5 speeds have?.

First is 3.97, with the 3.73's I have left over from the auto, first runs out pretty quick. Google for T5 identification charts, they have lots of info.

I T5 swapped and had the 3.73's in the old 7.5" rear end.... 1st gear was pretty much useless for anything over 20mph... and in 5th gear I cruised 80mph at 3000 rpms...

I swapped the 7.5" out for an 8.8" with 3.73's and I'm lookin to jump up to 4.10's soon after I do my 331 stroker swap.

3.45 (older turbo cars) 3.55 (new 2.3's).

You sure about that? First I'd ever heard of 3.55's. AFAIK, all five-speed 2.3's have 3.45's and all auto 2.3's have 3.73's.

stinger is correct about the turbo cars having diff gears... they have the added hp and torque to run em... if you put a 3.27 in a NA 2.3 with an automatic... it prolly wouldnt even be able to get moving...

Sorry how about 5.0 I did not see title? I read 2.73's
or 3.08's (optional) please don't tell me to get in my own
