Aluminum is more difficult to weld than steel. Many welders can't or won't do it and often think it can't be done. Those will lead you to believe that a crack or hole can't be fixed.
Aluminum can be mended to the same degree as steel it just requires different equipment and procedures.
My advice would be to have the intake looked at by a reputable welding shop and see what they say. It may cost more than it's worth, but it could probably be repaired.
