I need horsepower!

I am a new member but i have been on the site a couple of times, and i would like to say that i really like what yall have going here.

Anyways, i have a 1970 stock 302 mustang coupe and i wanted to know what all you guys think i should do to increase my horsepower. I dont want anything major, just more horsepower to beat the tuners, fireturds, and crapmaros running around here. I am looking to only spend a couple grand on more horses, only because i am also redoing the interior and repainting the exterior. So if you could give me some suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.

Also (this might be a dumb question) can a shaker hood scoop and its whole assembly fit on a stock 302 or does it need a special carb or something?

This link is to a 347 shortblock for $1895. It's on special right now - I just happened across it while shopping for a bare block. Replace your current shortblock with this one - just bolt everything else up. Yes, it will be choked by your present heads/intake/cam etc., but it will serve as a great starting point for future growth.

you could do that or you could get top end stuff now and do the bottom end later. i'd recommend a set of heads and intake carb and headers and if you have enough left a good distributor and maybe an msd box too. research spend wisely and you can get parts that will work now and if you upgrade the shortblock later. right now i wouldn't worry about a cam swap as the other mods will make a big diff in the way the car runs and feels, but cams are relatively cheap so if you can swing that as well you're golden. you should be able to do all of the above for 2 grand or less, with careful parts selection. you should check around for a get used set of heads and intake also, you'd be surprised how far 2 grand can go if you can get good used parts

Thx for the ideas. If you have any other ideas then i am open. Do you all happen to know anything about the shaker hood scoop?

oh yeah, the 302 had a special air cleaner base for the shaker. keep in mind though that shakers are extremely expensive, even aftermarket shakers are about 500 bucks or so. it is mostly for looks, as you probably know, but it will help get a little more cool air into the engine.

Yea i know its mostly for looks, i just didnt know if it would fit on if i was to put some other carb on and if it would even go on the 302. It looks awesome though.

Gee, nobody mentioned the chief problem with my plan: compression ratio would be too high. That's the problem with getting heads without the stroker crank or vice versa. The combustion chamber size needs to be different to get the compression right (assuming flat top pistons). Oh well, it was a thought.

well actually i would use 60cc chamber heads on either build anyway, so it's really not that big a deal, but optimizing the compression is best. either combo with flat tops and 60cc chambers will make about 10.25-11.00:1 depending on head gasket choice.
