I need some BASS in my car.

Well I figured that I should finally put some subs in my car but I Don't want to put them in the trunk due to no space. I thought about cutting holes in the metal right below the rear seats facing forward but clearance issues i figured that i could reinforce it but........

I was wanting 2 10" but nowhere to put them any ideas??
I figured I could hide the amp behind the rear seats.

My car is a vert so less space

how much bass are you looking for? a single 10 will add enough to give you a nice full sounding stereo

i would say rear seat delete with some subs where the seat used to be(if you want a lot of bass) or just get a nice set of component speakers.

I think crutchfield might have some custom fit enclosures...this one comes with a 10" sub, it fits on the back passenger side behind the wheel...i think.... heres the link

Take this as you like, but when I get my car running, my sub setup is going to be an IB with a diagonal plate mounted right behind the back seat with one or two of these Parts Expressayton IB385-8 15" IB Subwoofer and maybe 200-250 watts/ea.

I know what you're thinking, that sub looks like a joke, cheapo and goofy, but I have that sub as much home theater sub in a 9 cu.f.t ported box that sounds crazy. Actually it's a popular DIY HT sub, very similar to the older JL Audio W3 series. I ran it in my Bronco for fun and I though it was going to break something and 20Hz. It was on par with my old setup in the stang with 3 JL Audio 12s which was also just excessive at 152db/35hz.

No need for a box, just lots of sound deadening/sealing of the trunk. An infinite baffle setup properly sounds amazing. Something like that could get you awesome SQ. It would work well with the stang. Some cars need an active EQ to tune then in since you won't be able to to it with a box. It won't quite get you crazy loud, but you could pull 135-140db with someting like that.

you have the passenger side seat cut out for the battery, why not make a small box for the other side and mount it under there.

There's no gap under the back seat. The seat is molded to the shape of the car body. Now if you had m4d skillz you could make a rear seat that WAS the speaker box. . .

For simplicity, a single 10" JL sub ported would sound very good. I still like the infinite baffle idea though

That is a thought. but It can't be taller than 6"

are you talking about the speaker that you mount to the chasis and basically turns the chasis into the sub?

or are u talking about the little 6" powered ones that all you need to do is run some wires to it

It's called a Bass Shaker. You can get it at the Parts Express link that was in an earlier post. I've thought about them but they will only be effective to about 60-80hz. A good idea, though. I'd like to see someone try them out.

A single 10" in the spare tire well seems the be the best solution. I have a coupe and that's prolly where my next sub will be.

This is the fun part of hot rodding.

yeah i couldnt remember the name of them bass shakers, neat lil things

in my 95 heres what i did,

took out the cheap cardboard like spare tire cover, traced that onto some MDF, cut it out

then traced the shape of my small 10" box onto the MDF and cut that out

Installed the new MDF spare well cover and then dropped in the 10" box

Does anyone here know the volume of the spare tire well? Maybe we could find a "perfect" driver to fit there. The cool thing about that is that you can mount the amp on the bottom side of the MDF and hide the whole thing.

Then, some 6.5" or 8" mid basses for the doors and rear parcel deck and you'd have a nice "foundation".

I have tried to chat with the guys in "sound and shine" and didn't get much of a response. I'm glad this thread is going here in the 94-95 section.

It's probably in the 1-1.5 cu.f.t range. If you built an MDF box into the well instead of fiberglassing it, you may end up with something like .75 cu.ft which would work for most 10" subs and some 12" subs if you seal it.

I wouldn't mount an amp underneath a false floor or inside a box. I'm paranoid about overheating amps though. I also like to have it in a place that makes tuning easier. Most amps will bolt up easily underneath the rear dash out of sight if you don't have the Mach460 thing under there.

I don't know about those 'bass shakers'. I've never believed in the whole theory of getting the bass experience via shaking whatever you're sitting on. It would just produce so much distortion and have horrible transient response. Not to mention not real frequency range. Your seat wasn't designed to accurately reproduce sounds. Sure you could feel shaking, but your ears DO pick up low frequencies so you will know the difference. Afterall, if they didn't hear low frequencies, how could you hear bass in headphones.

Some home theater guys like to attach them to wall studs but only to accentuate VERY low frequencies like under 15Hz that you get in movies. They run them to fill in for the subs in the ultra low range, but they still use subwoofers.

I think a real sub is the best way to go for the car.

On the other hand, you still may get one for the passenger seat. I'm sure plenty of women would be MORE than happy to have a bass shacker mounted right under them

I think the spare tire well is your best bet, unless you want to keep your spare in there of course... What about a single 10" or even dual 10's in the trunk, but use truck boxes? I have a pic below of what style box I mean, except mine is an 8" sub that was free. Here are also a few pics of my setup in progress. I got married on saturday, so nevermind the mess, cause Ive been busy. I used a single 12" Kicker solobaric L5. Its just a middle of road sub in their lineup right under the L7, but produces plenty of bass for me, hence why I am only using one. One of them in you spare tire well would probably do the trick. I bought mine off ebay refurbished for $99. So far so good, as you can see I wired the amp up real quick just to test it. Mine sounds great even with a cheap ass Pyramid amp, so I cant wait to hear it when I get a better one. I hope the pics arent too big, cause I just threw them up here quick without resizing!

Ya. I'm pretty well "over" having a big sub box in the trunk. My goal is to make the system totally transparent, so that NOTHING can be seen. (Except maybe the headunit.)

I'll probably run a single 10" in the spare tire well (I have Cobra brakes and refuse to pay ~$200 for an original Cobra spare.) with a mono ~200wrms amp.

I didnt really want a big box either, but Ive had it laying around for a few years from my old car, and decided to use it rather than spend more money for something different when it was perfectly good. I think you may want an amp capable of 300-400 watts rms to push a decent middle of the road 10" sub. If you go too weak, you wont really be able to hear it good enough through the back seat to be worth the investment...

Well I found 2 rockford fosgate punch HE 10" subs for $50
400w max 4 ohms

now I need a amp I was reading the FAQ in the sound shop and got confused???

I figured I need a 2 channel amp but As far as the watts I was lost. So maybe you guys can help me with that.
