I should have went deeper than 4:10's

Picked up my car tonight and I thought for sure my shop did not install the 4:10's and made a mistake and put in 3:73's or something. Ive had many street/strip cars over the last 20 years and from my first impression on the street and freeway I could have easily went with 4:30's or possibly 4:56's!

BTW, Got my AMF cam tensioner tool in the mail today and I'm still waiting for my valvespring compressor tool and a custom chip from T&J tuned for Comp 270's. Starting on my long tube installation tommorow night! Hope it all works!

Wow...if you can't notice a huge difference in 4.10's over stock, I think you may need to get your brain recalibrated.

To me, it felt like 60rwhp was added in first gear, and 50rwhp in second. Put a huge smile on my face the first time I ripped on it.

you guys must not do the type of freeway driving that I do then....I just hate shifting so much though....4.10's on my 5.0 was worse than on the cobra thats for sure. I agree...if you didn't notice much from the 4.10's then something is wrong with you man.....

gears don't work miracles ...yeah theyll give it a kick and probably shave a few tenths, maybe a half off your time, but you're still dealing with the same number of horses ...and once you get steeper than, say, 4.30s ...it will probably just make it even harder to get good 1/4 times

I like freeway driving now cruisin at 80 im at like 2600 which sounds good instead of the loud drone at 2000.

I was like that when I got my gears put in. I was like this feels the same but after a week or so I liked em. Dont know why I was like that though.

The thing about 4.10's is, that it makes you shift into 4th gear right before the traps for the Cobras. With 4.30's, you would be shifting into 4th earlier and would get to use more of your powerband.

If I was a serious n/a dragster, I would definately go with 4.56's, but i'm not. There are some days that I wish I went with 4.30's, but I am content with my 4.10's.

IMO Cobras benefit the most from gears of all Mustangs. We have 1,000rpm more to work with, and make a lot of peak power. With a peaky, revv happy V8 that can revv to 7000rpm, short gears are a must. The 3.27's that come on the 32v's are painfully tall. Hell, even GM puts 3.55's stock on their torquey 5.7L camaros.

Since the GT's redline at 5800/6000rpm, I would assume that you guys aren't shifting into 4th gear right before the traps. I would think that 4.10's would be a perfect track gear for GT's, with their powerband.

Tomorrow will be 1 week since I had my 4.10's installed. I agree, 4.30's would have been better. Don't get me wrong, I like the way it feels now with the 4.10's compared to the 3.27's, but it's not as good as I thought it would be. I've driven plenty of muscle car that pull harder than mine does now. I guess I was just expecting more than I got out of the gears. Who knows, maybe a T-56 6 speed with a .50 OD and a set of 4.56's might be on my to do list or perhaps a Vortech and 3.73's!

I like the driveability of the 4.10's. I still think 3.73's should be stock though! I'm glad I didn't fear the gear and went with 4.10's. I wish when driving through town I could flip a switch and have 4.56's then flip switch back and have 4.10's for the highway.

After I got my 4.30's, I was surprised at how tolerable both the gas mileage and rpms were. To be honest, if I wasn't worried about running out of gear in 3rd, I would have went with 4.56's and my car is a daily driver and I would have done it in a heart beat.

As far as gas mileage, well, I just now got the low fuel light for this tank of gas and that was after 292 miles of driving. This was no easy grandpa tank of gas either. I have floored it more than just once or twice and I've done a fair share of in town driving as well. To be honest, I don't think my gas mileage went down with the 4.30 gears....I think it has gone up though. Could be the tune though from SCT thats causing it. Oh well, like others have said in this thread. Gears do give a good pull for the money, but they most certaintly aren't a supercharger or nitrous. That much is for certain. However, they are still the best bang for the buck.

Thats because the gears finally broke in. I remember when I pulled my car off after getting the 31 spline rear and and 4.30's put in, the car felt a bit sluggish but once I got some miles on them, the acceleration picked up greatly. I guess all the new parts need some breaking in and they also need to get lubed up really good.

Im not an expert on anything, but based on the 6000 rev limit for the 99-up GT's, I would say 4:10 is the best gear for it. If u are mostly a drag racer, N/A, then 4:30's Id guess. There will only be a .1 difference in the 1/4 at most and the difference isnt going to be that great. I say invest most in the engine mods, cams, heads, turbo, superchrg, to name a few and youd be way happier. I like the 4:10's and I did notice a difference with them, if anything the tires lite up easier and I get in the pwrbnd faster, what else do u need??????????? They alone are the end all of the mods, but they help.
