Finally some progress! Got the new King Cobra clutch and flywheel installed and just tightened up the bolts on the rebuilt T5.

Went down to the parts store to get some GM Synchromesh fluid but they were all out.

So I guess I wait another day.

I just read a long post on the SVT website's forums, and it looks like I would be better off with something Like Mobil 1 synthetic ATF.

Any other thoughts?

awesome.

i am starting to see a bit of light myself. all i really have left in my project to buy is

rebuild kit for motor
going to get A/C delete kit and UD pullies at same time i think.

then i need to get a clutch kit, going with OEM from parts store ( 100 bucks )

and probably a rearend bushing kit

this may sound stupid, but back when i was just getting into cars... i DREAMED of JUST having a 5.0

well i get closer to getting one, then i start thinking of what i want to do it.

now i get it, start working on it, but my "goal" still isnt achieved.
i've spent hundreds but the "goal" i've had from day one isnt achieved.

but recently i look back and realize how much i've learned about cars, and i see that i reached the original goal.

but there is always the "goal" that always laughing in your face and saying "hahahah you cant reach me"

Hey bud, you just got your trans back from Astro, right?

I would call them and ask what they want you to use (for warranty concerns).

I am not a Synchromesh fan myself, though many like it. Some folks run M1. Redline D4 is well liked.

have them look it up for a 93 cobra .....advance has a good one for $134.88 , part number MU70071-1

Use Castrol MerconV or even cheap dextron and a half-quart of Lucas. Once you mix the Lucas with atf it thins enough to work well in the t5. I even use the Lucas trick in transfer cases with pumps and no probs. Any atf is a compromise in lubricating gears.

Any thicker fluid could make cold weather shifting a problem or even smoke bearings. The Lucas mixed has never showed signs of that. Just don't use too much. The t5 has very small oil passages designed for thin fluid. Thick oil won't flow.

I worked on a t5 once that some fool put 90wt in. They might have been covering up a noise to sell it. I don't know if the 90wt smoked it but that wouldn't suprise me.

yea the 90w isn't a good thing. Not only that but it stinks to boot!

I can under stand the reaching goals, adding new goals, and not reaching goals.......thing is you reach a goal and you make new ones, bigger and better. The more we play around with these addictions (our stangs) the better. Just draw out a plan and stick with it. My biggest problem is and has been changing in mid stream! That usually cost more money than anything....
Cars can be fun and challenging. But done right and planed out...........the end result is more than just fun its awsome!

Wound up using the royal purple ATF, however this T-5 is not a rebuild and has a few miles on it. When It gets warmed up real good It performs like brand new. Guess that means my syncros are on their way out

Sounds like a plan.

And FWIW in regard to other comments, older (non WC) T5's took gear oil, as do many T5's for other applications (Bronco's, etc). I am sure y'all were talking about WC T5's, but it is worth noting that there are trannies calling for gear oil. Additionally, the factory fill of ATF smells a lot like gear oil - I am not sure how they managed to pull that off.

Now I need to figure out what happened to the old background on here.

I never heard of any T5s requiring gear oil. Both the 1983 and 1984 Mustang owners manuals I have specify DERON II ATF for their operation and they are not WCs.

The early fox trannies that had non-needle bearings (and different soft parts) did use gear oil. There has been a lot of kicking around of exact dates on Foureyedpride, since some of those guys use gear oil.

I use dextron with a half quart of Lucas in all of them. ATF gives the easy shift and Lucas lubes. If I don't have any Lucas I use 16oz of 90wt.

Whoever decided to save the whales messed up transmission fluid forever. That is why they had to invent synthetic crap that leaks real easy. Back in the day atf lubed very well because it had whale oil in it.

I actually could care less about whales unless they were almost extinct.

Remember the gear oil back in the 60's and 70's? Smelled way different than the stuff today. Reason?---it was rendered blubber.

Actually every t5 ever takes atf as far as I know. Of course some may have had gear oil from the factory, but atf shifts smoother. The lucas will lube the gears.

Just got off the phone with Tony from Astro Performance Warehouse again. He can't get a solid answer yet from TREMEC. So here is what he instructed me to do based on the factory service literature for a T5 STANDARD. Fill the T5 with standard MERCON ATF (such as Valvoline) and allow it to break in for 3K-5K miles. After that I can switch to a synthetic (such as Mobil 1) MERCON ATF if I so choose. The reason you don't start with a synthetic is because it is so slippery it does not adhere to the synchros very well for the initial run-in. If he does receive word from TREMEC to switch to a gear lubricant instead of the ATF, he will pass that information on.
