I WANT 250HP+ FROM A CARBED 302....REPLY!

DONT JUST READ.....REPLY!! PLEASE!
Ok guys im putting a carbed 302 in my 87 lx. it is now a efi 2.3, I am in the process of looking for a good motor to put in. I want to get any where from 225 - 275HP out of a carbed 302 with no MAJOR work. If I do a good intake,a 4 barrel holley, gut the cats, use stock 5.0 headers, and no ac,smog, can i get even close to this? If not what do i need to do to get about 250hp ou tof a 302? i dont have alot of $$ to spend and i need this car to be as practicle as possible. I am a student with a part time job, so the gas milege will be a factor. I currently have a t-5 in my car and ima use it when i do the swap also. I already have the parts to make it work, now its just time to pick up a motor. P.S. Is there a certain stock 302 that puts out about that much power already? I will most likely be getting a junk yard good running 302 and doing a seal and shine on it.

Well your basic 87+ 5.0 is rated at 225 but with any miles, I dont think most actually put that out. I would think that if you used one of the roller block 5.0's with a good dual plane intake, 600cfm carb, aftermarket headers, free flowing cat pipe or off road pipe and decent cat back would get you pretty close. The stock heads will hold you back though so to hit your 275 mark I would think you would have to change those. And no matter what you will need to have it all tuned in good, fiddle with carb jetting, timing etc.

i would reconsider using stock headers, and like mr kwik stated the heads are going to be the weak link you can shave the heads a bit for a little bump in compression and do a .030 over and a mild cam.its really all going to come down to the actual little details in the reassembly process but you will get there.

I would look for any 302 with stud rockers form the factoy, then go from there.

Get a cheap solid flat tappet cam a lifter set,and valves springs and set the lash a little on the loose side.Best intake for this IMO is a Edelbrock Performer RPM Air-Gap,use that with a 1" open space and a 650 Holley with mechanical secondaries. Then small stuff like a 165* T-stat,and undrive pulleys. If you got any left of (or think you do,heh) then you woud want to get some roller rockers,as the stock one creat a lot of friction and heat.

This is what I have found that I think will be a good set of heads at a resonable price. http://thumperoforangepark.com/
I am running a E-303 cam on a roller engine with 600cfm carb. I will be putting on the air gap intake in the next two weeks but i am runing a duel plane weiand and it ok. This is all in my Ranger. And acrding to my program desk top dyno its at about 225 without the new heads. Good luck

An 87 and up efi roller engine should do this with just a carb and intake, or get real close to it.

Get the least expensive motor you can find, use a Duraspark ignition, Performer RPM or Airgap, a Holley 600 vac or 650 carb and go.

If you can afford it, port some E7's as noted above.

I would not go back to late 60's or 70's heads unless you get a deal. You will have as much money in them with less result vs the later ones. The Thumper stuff seems good.

I got my 88 lx into the 13's on the factory engine with street tires, If I remeber right thats around 250-260 HP. It has 240,000 miles and was (have since modifyed it) dead stock from intake to oil pan except for a good tune up. It had never even been apart (factory embossed ford gaskets, when I started taking it apart)
